Vintage American Hand Hooked Area Rug with a Floral Pattern in Pastel Colors
About the Item
Beautiful hand-hooked area rug from the mid 1900s. The rug has a floral pattern set in a pale green background. The center medallion is a bouquet of flowers in pastel color including pale green, yellow, ivory and pink. The edge of the rug is a pale brown framing the design. The essence of “American Folk Art '' the hand-hooked rugs were generally created by the individuals using simple tools and material recycling for use in their homes. The simplicity in the design and sometimes the naiveness of the figures adds to the beauty and the charm of this vintage folk art creation in our Americana Collection.
Antique and Vintage Hooked Rugs are a combination of Folk Art Creativity and Simplicity. When it comes to true simplicity and artistic creativity Antique Hooked Rugs have some of the best representations. The tradition of Hooked Rug started in New England. “Hooking” started as a hobby for the farmers in the long and dark cold winter nights of North East States in the US in the early 1800s. Hooked rugs were made as functional pieces for the home either as a bed cover or small carpet for the floor.

- Vintage American Hand Hooked Rug in a Geometric Block Pattern in Pastel ColorsLocated in Barrington, IL19th Century hand hooked rug in a free form design, We are intrigued with the novelty and the imagination of the maker in creating such a wonderful and rare design in earth tone colors. The hooked rugs from the late 19th and early 20th centuries are made with recycled old material, often used clothing that had been cut into narrow stripes. The foundation of hooked rugs is generally burlap material which the maker uses the stenciling technique to transfer the pattern into the surface.
