A fine gilt and patinated bronze sculpture that captures the figure of an Alsatian, often noted in literature as a German Shepherd. He is situated with an alert and friendly profile while seated over a rocky naturalistic base. The complex patina is notable with a rich brown chemical patina under a vibrant gilt wash with rubbed bronze highlights. Louis Riché is perhaps best known for his portrayal of the Alsatian, with a large series of figures capturing the personality and gait of the canine. A prolific Animalier, Riché studied under sculptor Georges Gardet and started exhibiting at Salon 1896 where he continued to exhibit regularly, though pausing from exhibitions during both World Wars. While a large portion of his work was cast with Thiebaut Frères, he partnered with numerous major foundries of the era including Colin et Cie, Jollet et Cie...

A large and impressive bronze of two Russian wolf hounds cast in bronze. The dogs retain most of their silvered finish and the ground they are walking on is patinated bronze. In addition to the artist's signature this bronze is further marked: Medialle d'Or as well as the name of the foundry, F. Claessens Foundry, Paris. Here is a biography for Riché: Louis Riche (May 29, 1877-1949) known as one of 'the Animaliers' in sculpture during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Riche first exhibited at the Salon in Paris was in 1896 at the early age of 19 years. The Parisian born sculptor became very famous for his realistic bronze statues depicting animals, specializing in dogs-specifically his personal favorite, German Shepherds. He exhibited at the Salons throughout the years, into the 20th century, with the only interruption being World Wars I & II. He worked mainly with the Thiebault Freres foundry for his bronze castings, but some of his silver sculptures (of lions) were cast by Risler and...
