Louise Abbéma 1853–1927 Louise Abbéma (30 October 1853[1] – 10 July 1927) was a French painter, sculptor, and designer of the Belle Époque. Abbéma was born in Étampes, Essonne Born into a wealthy aristocratic Parisian family with close ties to the city’s artistic community, She began painting in her early teens, and studied under such notables of the period as Charles Joshua Chaplin, Jean-Jacques Henner and Carolus-Duran. Portraits of actors and actresses at the Comédie Française dominated her early works until she made a name for herself at the Salon of 1876 with her portrayal of the “Divine Sarah.” Abbéma ultimately executed multiple portraits and received recognition for her work at age 23 a bronze medallion of Sarah Bernhardt, with whom she was a close friend and possibly lover. Like most women artists of the time, Abbéma focused mainly on portraiture and genre scenes (images of everyday life). Her high-society portraits executed with a light touch and rapid brushstrokes reveal the academic and Impressionist influences that shaped her style. Her sitters included French diplomats and other notable members of society. Abbéma developed a variety of techniques using oil paints, pastel, and watercolor, and worked on various supports, including fans. Abbéma received commissions for panels and murals which adorned the Paris Town Hall, the Paris Opera House, numerous theatres including the Theatre Sarah Bernhardt, and the "Palace of the Colonial Governor" at Dakar, Senegal. Abbéma solidified her international reputation after exhibiting works, including two wall murals (on canvas), at the Women’s Building at the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago. A bust of Sarah Bernhardt sculpted by Abbéma was also exhibited at the exposition. Abbéma specialized in oil portraits and watercolors, and many of her works showed the influence from Chinese and Japanese painters, as well as contemporary masters such as Édouard Manet. She frequently depicted flowers in her works. Among her best-known works are The Seasons, April Morning, Place de la Concorde, Among the Flowers, Winter, and portraits of actress Jeanne Samary, Emperor Dom Pedro...

Impressionist Painting of a Bohemian Woman Budapest 1925 Bertha De Hellebranth

Located in Rochester, NY

Bohemian woman Budapest, Hungary 1925 by Bertha De Hellebranth. Fabulous period painting brings to life the bohemian intelligentsia of Europe in the 1920's. I believe the painting is of the artists sister Elena Maria De Hellebranth. Both sisters were accomplished artist and worked and exhibited together. See the photo of the sisters Elena on the left and Bertha on the right. Oil on canvas. In a period frame. Signed lower right. Inscribed on reverse. Provenance: label from Newman Galleries Philadelphia. BIOGRAPHY ; Bertha de Hellebranth and her sister Elena were born into a cultured upper-class family in Budapest, Bertha in 1899, Elena in 1897. Their father was a lawyer and their mother a student of Franz Liszt's last living pupil. Both sisters showed artistic potential early, beginning to paint at four or five years of age. Their parents encouraged them, and had the means to send them to the best art schools of the time. They studied at the Academy of Fine Art in Budapest, at the Académie Julian and the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris, and painted portraits of European nobility. As Patricia Fazekas points out, "Growing up in a family of privilege, they seemed to have unusual access to many illustrious people." So we should not be surprised to find among their subjects members of high society, such as Count Andrássy Gyula, the Russian-born Princess Baby Galitzine, and Admiral Horthy Miklós, the Regent. Later on, their subjects included American heiress Gladys Vanderbilt (Countess László Széchenyi), President Theodore Roosevelt's granddaughter Paulina Longworth and former President Dwight D. Eisenhower.Often, the sisters would paint the same subject at the same time, offering the sitter a choice of portraits. Most often, the sitter wanted both renditions. While Elena concentrated on working in oil and watercolor, Bertha used gouache and oil to achieve her effects. Elena gave lectures and workshops, was a writer and also wrote popular and ecclesiastical music, while Bertha also went in for sculpture and handicrafts. From the mid-thirties until World War II, Bertha and Elena divided their time between their home in Budapest and a home on the ocean at Ventnor, NJ. In 1925, they showed their work at the Nemzeti Szalon in Budapest, and in 1926, they had a joint exhibition of their portraits in the US. Both exhibited their work at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Brooklyn Museum of Art, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and most major museums and galleries in the US. Bertha also had exhibits at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Both Bertha and Elena were Fellows of the Royal Society of Art (London), and garnered numerous prizes. Bertha was awarded First Prize by the National Academy of the American Water Color Society one year, and the Grand Prize of the Audubon Society. She was one of the founders of the now defunct World League of Hungarian Artists Abroad (Külföldi Magyar Képz?m?vészek Világszövetsége), and received a Gold Medal from the Cleveland Árpád Akadémia in 1963. (Elena also received the Akadémia's gold medal in 1965.) Their work is found in museums and galleries too numerous to mention. The de Hellebranth sisters were devout Catholics, and this is evident in their many portraits of clerics...

Abbéma Louise Étampes 1853 – 1927 Paris French Painter 'Lady in Paris on a Winter Day' Signature: Signed lower middle right Medium: Oil on canvas Dimensions: Image size 100 x 120 cm, frame size 112 x 132 cm Biography: Louise Abbéma, a prominent French artist of the Belle Époque, was born on October 30, 1853, in Étampes, Essonne, France. She hailed from a wealthy Parisian family with strong connections to the local artistic community. Her family’s artistic ties ran deep, as her great-grandmother was the renowned actress Louise Contat. From a young age, Abbéma exhibited a talent for painting and began her artistic journey in her early teens. She received formal training under the guidance of notable artists of her time, such as Charles Joshua Chaplin, Jean-Jacques Henner, and Carolus-Duran. Her talent and dedication bore fruit when, at the age of 23, she painted a portrait of the legendary actress Sarah Bernhardt, who became both a lifelong friend and, speculatively, a romantic partner. Abbéma’s artistic endeavors extended far beyond portraiture. She lent her creative touch to the embellishment of various iconic Parisian landmarks. Her panels and murals graced the Paris Town Hall, the Paris Opera House, numerous theaters (including the aptly named “Théâtre Sarah Bernhardt”), and even the “Palace of the Colonial Governor” in Dakar, Senegal. Her unique style combined academic and impressionistic elements, characterized by the use of light and rapid brushstrokes. Recognition continued to find Abbéma, and she became a regular exhibitor at the prestigious Paris Salon, earning an honorable mention for her work in 1881. She also had the distinction of having her art displayed at the Women’s Building during the 1893 World Columbian Exposition in Chicago. Moreover, a bust of Abbéma sculpted by Sarah Bernhardt was showcased at the exposition. Abbéma’s artistic repertoire was diverse, encompassing oil portraits and watercolors. Her work often bore the influence of Chinese and Japanese painters, as well as contemporary masters like Édouard Manet. Flowers were a recurring motif in her creations. Some of her most celebrated works include “The Seasons,” “April Morning,” “Place de la Concorde,” “Among the Flowers,” “Winter,” and portraits of prominent individuals such as actress Jeanne Samary, Emperor Dom Pedro II...

Sarah Bernhardt Hunting with Hounds by Louise Abbe

By Louise Abbema

Located in New Orleans, LA

Louise Abbéma 1858-1927 French Sarah Bernhardt Hunting with Hounds (Diane) Signed "Louise Abbema" (upper left) Oil on canvas This painting was illustrated in the catalogue of the 1907 Salon of the Société des Artistes Français on page 43. A very similar portrait by Abbéma was shown at the Paris Salon of 1907 under the title Diane. A preparatory study was auctioned in 1992 under the title Portrait de Mlle Delettrez en habit de l'équipage du Prince de la Tour d'Auvergne. This elegant Belle Époque portrait is the work of celebrated artist, sculptor and designer Louise Abbéma. Almost certainly depicting legendary actress Sarah Bernhardt, this magnificent oil on canvas captures the iconic actress in a stately riding habit before a hunt. One of the most successful women artists of her day, Abbéma was also an engraver, watercolorist, draughtswoman, illustrator and writer. She enjoyed an extremely close friendship with Bernhardt for many years, and eventually became the great thespian's official portraitist. A painter in the Impressionist style, Abbéma is known for her allegorical paintings and genre scenes, and especially for her portraits of society ladies, interiors and a myriad of floral works. Born in Etampes, France, the great-granddaughter of actress Mlle. Contat and Comte Louis de Narbonne, she had an early introduction to the arts through her aristocratic family and was greatly influenced by painter Rosa Bonheur. At a time when it was still unusual for a woman to be accepted into art academies, she became a pupil of Charles Chaplin in 1873, Carolus-Duran the following year, and, later, Jean-Jacques Henner. In 1876, at the age of 18, Abbéma painted a portrait of Bernhardt, whom she met five years earlier, which was exhibited at the Paris Salon des Artistes Français of 1876 (at Carolus-Duran's suggestion, she had begun showing work in the Salon the previous year.) Portrait of Sarah Bernhardt was an immediate success for the young painter (only 22 at the time). She continued to exhibit regularly at the Salon until 1926, gaining an honorable recommendation in 1881 and a bronze medal at the Exposition Universelle of 1900. Soon after this triumph, Abbéma created a bronze medallion of Bernhardt (the only known sculpture by her), which she exhibited at the Salon in 1878. In turn Bernhardt, herself a sometime sculptor, exhibited a marble bust of Abbéma at the same Salon. Abbéma later made drawings of both sculptures. Abbéma went on to pursue a brilliant career as a society portrait painter, depicting the celebrities of the age, her former teachers, Charles Garnier, architect of the Paris Opéra, Ferdinand de Lesseps, and Don Pedro the Emperor of Brazil, among many others. One of her most esteemed works is the painting Déjeuner dans la serre...
