Pair of Louis XVI Style Leather Armchairs by Maison Gouffé, Paris, Circa 1940
By Maison Gouffé
Located in Dallas, TX
Bergere chairs are armchairs with closed sides, as opposed to the open armrests seen in chairs prior to the early 18th century. Designed for comfort and relaxation, bergère chairs feature a deeper and wider design than its predecessor, the fauteuil. This fabulous pair of Louis XVI style armchairs were crafted by Maison Gouffé, in Paris, circa 1940.
The wood frames have been painted antique white, which offers a stark contrast to the light brown leather that has been affixed to the seating areas and arms via hundreds of iron nailheads. Slender manchettes and cylindrical bolster pillows have been upholstered in the same leather. The frames have been hand-carved with acanthus leaf and volutes motifs along the armrests. Square joineries have a floret carving on the front side, with recessed square molding on the other three sides. The carved recessions can also be seen along the top of the back and the arm stumps. Each leg has been carved with tapering chandelle legs (known during Louis XVI as gaine legs) and bun feet.

Spectacular Modernist Bar by Jean Gouffé, circa 1935, Signed, Art Deco, France
By Maison Gouffé
Located in Paris, FR
This bar is highly decorative and epitomizes the French art deco modernist style. The large front door opens as a drop-leaf desk and offers a wide compartment for bottles and glasses. It offers multiple additional storage: 2 compartments on the right side and one on the left side (locked by a key), below a niche and a last compartment opening with a double door. The front panel is covered with parchment and the rest is entirely covered with blond burr veneer wood. The base is encompassed with nickel-plated metal. Its limited depth makes it very convenient.
Signed on a metal plate (on the interior of the bottom right compartment door): "Gouffé 46-48, 50 Faubourg Saint Antoine Paris".
