Mark Sink Portrait Photography

American, b. 1958
Mark Sink, a Denver-based photographer, had a formative experience in the 1980s working alongside several influential artists in New York City. During this period, he collaborated with Robert Mapplethorpe, known for his bold and intimate portraits, whose work deeply influenced Sink's approach to human subjects. He also worked with Keith Haring, whose vibrant, socially engaged art inspired Sink’s exploration of color and dynamic space in photography. Additionally, Sink was exposed to the creative atmosphere of Andy Warhol's Factory, where he absorbed Warhol’s unique approach to celebrity culture and mass production, shaping his understanding of the art-world persona. Sink also collaborated with Cindy Sherman, whose conceptual photography focused on identity and self-representation, influencing Sink's own exploration of these themes in portraiture. Sink’s collaborations with these and other prominent artists like Jean-Michel Basquiat and Laurie Anderson provided him with a rich artistic foundation. Their innovative work encouraged Sink to experiment with different photographic techniques and to blend fine art, performance, and conceptual photography, a direction that would define much of his career. These experiences in New York City helped shape Sink’s artistic vision, which continues to push the boundaries of traditional photography while exploring identity, memory, and the human experience.

Capuchin 3 - Signed limited edition archival pigment print - Edition of 10 A series of three portrait images of a Capuchin monkey in a stylised painterly style. This portraits are inspired by my fascination with animal intelligence. The Capuchin monkey is instantly recognised due to its distinctive two tone colouring which of course also led to the Italian word Cappuccino. The word itself originally derives from the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin, an offshoot from the Franciscans, who wear brown robes with large hoods. Considered the most intelligent monkeys, the Capuchin has learnt to use stones...
