Mid-Century Modern, Arm Chair in Wood and Patinated Cognac Leather, 1950

By Josef Frank, Anna-Lülja Praun

Located in Hausmannstätten, AT

A spindle back armchair designed by Anna-Luelja Praun (1906-2004), Vienna, Austria, manufactured in midcentury, circa 1952. It is made of a warm toned solid wood frame with two loose leather cushions for the seat and the back. The cognac colored leather has a beautiful patina. The chair is in great condition with little wear on the cushions. About Anna-Lülja Praun: Anna-Lülja Praun was born in Sankt Petersburg, Russia, in 6/29/1906 and lived in Vienna until 9/28/2004. She was an important Austrian designer and architect and she was one of the first females who studied architecture in Austria. In 1947 she worked on the restoration of the palace Belvedere which was heavily damaged in the second world war. In 1952 she opened her own studio in Vienna. She designed houses, interiors, furniture, shops, light fixtures, and pottery (together with Gudrun Baudisch). From 1953-1959 she also worked for the furniture shop „Haus und Garten“ which was established by Josef Frank in 1925. In 1959 she designed a bench „Bank zum Ausruhen“ for the conductor Herbert von Karajan.

Postmodern Hunter green leather Balzo armchair, Massimo Iosa Ghini, Moroso, 1987. Iosa-Ghini's Bolidista manifesto (1982) exhorted designers to “break the reign of the angular line” and “find once more the sinuous curve.” Bolidismo is derived from bolide, the Italian word for a fast-moving object (such as a speeding bullet), or an object whose appearance implies speed. Iosa-Ghini followed up his Bolidist manifesto with an appealing series of chairs, cabinets and table-top accessories for such marques as Memphis and Moroso. The pieces combine the exuberance of his early work as a set designer and cartoonist with a smiling look back at 20th century design influences--including futurism (the avant-garde movement preceding World War I that romanced the wind-swept, streamlined look of ships, bridges and airplanes); Buck Rogers (1930s and 1940s science fiction), and 1950s moderne (furniture with skinny, pointy legs). On an architectural scale, he created Bolido, a New York nightclub and restaurant that boasts sweeping stair rails...
