Miguel Conde Figurative Paintings

Mexican, b. 1939
Miguel Condé, is a superb Mexican figurative painter, draftsman and etcher. His work reflects the dualities of his personal life. Born in 1939 in the United States to an American father and a Mexican mother, he spent time in both countries before moving to Spain in 1969. Condé creates etchings with strong classical themes reflecting his personal and literary influences. Themes featured in his prints are often inspired by Greek literature and Renaissance portraiture. Condé fuses the traditional imagery he employs to a robust modernist style that suggests Picasso's Minotauromachy. He is self-taught, with the exception of anatomy studies with Stephen Rogers Peck in New York and etching techniques in Stanley William Hayter’s Atelier 17 in Paris. He was the recipient of a Guggenheim Latin American Fellowship, and has been awarded various international prizes. as well as being an appointed member of the Société des Peintres-Graveurs Français. Selected Public Collections: The Museum of Modern Art in New York, University of Essex Collection of Latin American Art, Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid Albertina in Vienna Bibliothèque nationale de France in Paris Cleveland Museum of Art Blanton Museum of Art in Austin

Mid Century Expressionist Portrait Oil Painting Catalan Barcelona Taüll School

By Jaume Muxart Domenech

Located in Sitges, Barcelona

Expressionist Neofigurative Portrait Oil Painting Catalan Taüll Group School Artist: Jaume Muxart Medium: Oil on canvas Dimensions: 61 × 50 cm (24 × 19.7 in) Signature: Signed lower right Frame: Unframed Condition: Very good condition. Stable paint surface with original impasto visible Origin: Spain Period: Mid-20th century DESCRIPTION Expressive neofigurative portrait by Catalan painter Jaume Muxart, a founding member of the influential Taüll Group and a key figure in the renewal of Spanish postwar painting. The composition presents a frontal stylized head structured through bold chromatic contrasts and gestural brushwork. A strong vertical axis divides the face into two emotional registers, creating psychological intensity while reinforcing the structural rhythm of the composition. The interaction between white tonal fields and passages of cobalt blue, magenta and grey reveals the material sensitivity characteristic of Muxart’s mature neofigurative language. The textured surface preserves the physical presence of the brushstroke and reinforces the expressive tension of the figure. Portraits of this type represent one of the most recognizable directions within the artist’s production and reflect the broader evolution of European postwar figurative expression. This work belongs to the Catalan postwar neofigurative movement associated with artists such as Antoni Tàpies, Modest Cuixart and Josep Guinovart, with whom Muxart shared the experimental environment of the Taüll Group. Its expressive treatment of the human figure also connects with the wider European postwar tradition developed by Jean Dubuffet and Karel Appel, where gesture and material structure replace descriptive realism. Jaume Muxart (Martorell, 1922 – Barcelona, 2019) was a Catalan painter and founding member of the Taüll Group, alongside Antoni Tàpies, Modest Cuixart and Josep Guinovart, one of the most influential collectives in the renewal of Spanish postwar painting. He studied at the School of Fine Arts in Barcelona and later worked in Paris during the formative years of his career. He represented Spain at the São Paulo Biennial and developed an important international exhibition trajectory. Muxart also served as professor and dean at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Barcelona and remains recognized as a key figure within Catalan neofigurative painting of the twentieth century. Spanish modern painting...
