Comunemente noto come Settebello, secondo il nome coniato dagli operai che lo costruirono, l’automotore a sette vagoni Elettrotreno rapido 300 (ETR 300) è stato in esercizio presso le Ferrovie dello Stato dal 1952 al 1992. Un mezzo davvero unico, prodotto solo in 3 esemplari dalla ditta Ernesto Breda di Sesto San Giovanni (MI) con l’idea di dotare la flotta delle ferrovie statali di un prodotto che unisse nuova tecnologia e design avveniristico. Con una potenza di 2600 kW, più che doppia rispetto al suo predecessore ETR 200, L’ETR 300 poteva raggiungere agevolmente i 200 km/h, percorrendo l’intera tratta Milano-Roma in sole 5 ore e 45 minuti, ad una media di oltre 110 km/h quando ancora la direttissima Roma-Firenze non esisteva. Il progetto, caratterizzato da sagome aeronavali all’esterno, venne firmato da Giò Ponti, da Giulio Minoletti ed altri architetti e designers di grido dell’epoca, e prevedeva per l’arredamento interno innovative pareti vetrate, finestrini panoramici, salotti con poltrone mobili, sala ristorante ed ampio bar, servizio bagagli registrati. Forse l'elemento più distintivo erano le due carrozze bombate di testa che vennero progettate con cabine di guida sopraelevate per lasciare spazio in basso a confortevoli salotti belvedere per gli 11 posti di prima classe.
