Oliver Clare Landscape Paintings
British, 1853-1927
Oliver Clare was born in 1853, to the renowned still-life artist George Clare. The Clare family members were Victorian artists who specialized in, and were well known for their highly finished and precisely detailed still life and flower paintings.
Oliver spent most of his artistic life in Birmingham. Though there are no records indicating where he received his training, one can be quite certain that most, if not all, of it was from his father. Their stippling technique and choice of subject matter are almost identical.
While Oliver lived in Birmingham he was commissioned by a local health firm "Health Food Stores" to paint still-lives to be reproduced on postcards and posters.
Clare exhibited many paintings throughout his lifetime and is most often associated with the Artists of the West Midlands and the North. He exhibited: eighteen works at the Royal Society of Artists, Birmingham; three at the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool and six at the Manchester City Art Gallery. Throughout the late 1870's and early 1880's he lived in London where he exhibited several works there at the Royal Academy and the Royal Society of British Artists, Suffolk Street.to

A Walk along the River
By Marion Buricatu
Located in Boston, MA
Artist Commentary:
I’ve always wanted to paint a series on La Fleche, and it is happening… slowly. I love the very particular, soft lighting that seems so characteristic of the Loire Valley. Then, as I was looking through some pictures, this photo caught my painting teacher’s eye. She said, “I can’t wait to see what you’re going to do with this one!” This painting has three “fun” things about it. First, it is painted over a bright orange base coat like the two others in the series. Second, painting complementary colors over one another (the blue of the water over the orange base) normally results in something very similar to… mud. I had to be very careful! Third, this may not sound fun but I love painting grass and foliage - I use a technique where you hold the paintbrush at its tip, and just turn it around and around so the brushstrokes are almost touching. Do you have pictures saved where you always wonder, “what would that look like as a painting?” Or, “how would an artist or painter interpret my vacation picture?” You never know if they’ll start by painting the canvas orange!
Words that describe this piece: France, river, flower, water, reflection, walk,

Pair of Victorian still lives of fruit and flowers on a mossy bank landscape
By Oliver Clare
Located in Woodbury, CT
A Wonderful pair of finely painted Victorian still lives by Oliver Clare.
This exquisite painting by renowned Victorian English artist Oliver Clare beautifully captures a vibrant still life of flowers on a mossy bank. The composition is a testament to Clare's meticulous attention to detail and masterful use of color, bringing the delicate blooms to life with remarkable realism. At the center, clusters of white and pink blossoms, possibly apple blossoms, exude a sense of freshness and natural beauty, their petals delicately rendered to showcase subtle shades and intricate textures. To the left, a sprig of purple lilacs adds depth and contrast, enhancing the overall harmony of the piece.
The flowers are nestled against a lush, mossy bank, which Clare has depicted with rich, earthy tones and intricate brushwork, creating a textured backdrop that complements the softness of the blossoms. This natural setting evokes a sense of tranquility and timeless beauty, characteristic of Clare's work.
The painting is elegantly framed in an ornate, gilded Victorian frame, featuring intricate carvings that enhance its historical and aesthetic value. This frame not only serves to protect the artwork but also accentuates its classical charm, making it a stunning centerpiece suitable for any collection.
Overall, this painting is a remarkable example of Oliver Clare's skill in botanical still life, offering viewers a glimpse into the delicate and enchanting world of Victorian floral art.
The same skill can be seen with the other painting of Peaches...
