Patrick Kelly

Patrick Kelly is famous for his work as a fashion designer. The Mississippi-born designer presented his first collection in 1985 and quickly drew attention for his vibrant designs inspired by his Southern upbringing and African American heritage, as well as the gay club scenes of New York and Paris. He accessorized pieces like bodycon knit jersey dresses with bombastic details, including oversized bows, buttons and hearts. His joyous runway shows, which included mostly Black models, were also groundbreaking. He died on January 1, 1990, from complications from AIDS. Recent exhibitions like Patrick Kelly: Runway of Love, which debuted in 2014 at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, have returned his bold and vibrant work to the spotlight.
