He chose the name “Louise” when he created his more feminine version of Louis XV furniture and this elegant pair of Louis XV Chairs. The characteristic cabriole leg, curving outward at the knee and inward towards the foot in an "S" shape was born during Louis XV period. It is during the same era that English furniture makers produced the Queen Anne and Chippendale styles. The style of 18th-century French furniture was guided by the court. When Louis XV, who reigned from 1715–74, focused royal life on the smaller salons of Versailles rather than its grand chambers, it transformed the aesthetics away from the imposing and angular furniture that characterized the style of Louis XIV. The traditional metal clad furniture he found in India inspired renowned designer Paul Mathieu to create this elegant and curvaceous storage bench. The arcing sides and top of this piece are hand carved from solid pieces of teak. The hinged lid opens to reveal a removable inset tray. Pattern makers trace and cut complex forms that will cover the bench from thick sheets of copper, brass or white bronze. Once the bench is joined together, it is meticulously encased in a tight fitting skin of white bronze, copper or brass.
