The arcing sides and top of this piece are hand carved from solid pieces of teak. The hinged lid opens to reveal a removable inset tray. Pattern makers trace and cut complex forms that will cover the bench from thick sheets of copper, brass or white bronze. Once the bench is joined together, it is meticulously encased in a tight fitting skin of white bronze, copper or brass.     Yes, Jean Paul Gaultier is French. He was born in Arcueil, a suburb of Paris, in 1952.
