The Spiritual in Art: Abstract Painting 1890-1985 Art Book. Judi Freeman, Carel Blotkamp Abbeville Press, 1987 - Art - 435 pages. Paperback. Traces the use of geometric signs by the Nabis and other French artists and relates this to the development of abstraction. The author describes some of the sources of ideas about the symbolism of geometric signs, in particular the writings of Helena P. Blavatsky, and traces the impact of these on the Nabis, possibly through the stimulus of Gauguin whose paintings from his Brittany period encouraged a mystical conception of art in which sacred geometry figured as one component. By demonstrating the huge impact of mysticism and the occult on 20th-century artists from Gauguin to Pollack, Mondrian to O'Keefe, this work effectively refutes the popular fallacy that modernism is concerned solely with line, form, and color. He goes on to discuss in detail the paintings of Paul Serusier, Paul Ranson...

Watercolor Winter Farm Landscape Signed by G. Russell Case 1985 Framed

Watercolor Winter Farm Landscape Signed by G. Russell Case 1985 Framed

Located in Topeka, KS

Marvelous vintage 1985 watercolor landscape winter farm scene signed by G. Russell Case with gray matte & aluminum frame. Beautiful condition, keeping in mind that this is vintage and not new so will have signs of use and wear even if it has been refinished or restored. Specifically, no outstanding flaws detected. Please see photos, zoom in for details, and see long description as they are part of the condition report. We attempt to portray any imperfections. Circa, 1985. Words cannot describe that feeling when you find the perfect piece of art… and here we are, SPEECHLESS!!! This is an absolutely STUNNING watercolor of a winter farm landscape signed by G. Russell Case surrounded by a lovely gray matte and housed in a fabulous aluminum frame. It bears gorgeous colors of both dark & light blue, white, yellows, and browns. It is ready to ascend on ANY wall of your home that needs a magnificent, realistic art piece with incredible attention to detail. It is a snowy winter scene on a desolate farm that appears to be deserted... or possibly a comforting shelter to a few wilderness creatures trying to hunker down from the brisk breeze of the frosty winter air. Dark shadows of distant mountains boldly stand behind aged and broken utility poles and power lines that possibly once served the abandoned building. A ray of mid-day sunlight enhances a fractured white picket fence that lines the property above the glistening, snow covered ground. And a patch of brush and boulders peek through melted spaces where the sun kissed their peaks while tiny, scattered footprints have broken through the blanket of snow from wildlife scavenging the ground for a morsel. Breath-taking and bitterly cold but also breathtakingly beautiful… Was it a harsh winter and someone will return in warmer climate or is this the remnant of what was once a prosperous farm now vacant and meant to be admired by passersby? There is beauty to be found in what your imagination believes it to be… what could be… and what once was. This painting says that to me… What does it say to you? Russell Case was born in 1966 in Brigham City, Utah and he studied at Utah State University where he intended to become a professor of art. He graduated in 1990 but decided to pursue painting full-time. His father, Gary Case was also an artist and encouraged his son’s art career. His art is inspired by nature and idealized versions of western landscapes combining the beauty of the natural world with his deep imagination and mental originalities. Case’s work is typically of landscapes… simple, fresh, and pure. He is represented by several Western galleries and has won numerous awards including Best of Show, The Golden Thunderbird, and the Edith Hamlin...
