Richard Sapper (1932-2015) was born in German but worked in Italy, and his work brings together the best design principles of both nations. On one hand the ‘Tizio’ lamp possesses a northern European emphasis on functionalism. It was conceived as the ideal table lamp by its creator because of its wide range of movements, based on precisely calibrated counterweights at the end of each of the arms. On the other hand, it has a radically lithe profile and dusky, equipoised sense of style redolent of southern European sensibilities. Pair of table lamps mod. Tizio in black painted metal. The lamp is made up of two pairs of parallel arms which allow for a wide range of positions. The stability of these positions is determined by black steel counterweights fixed to the ends of the pairs of arms. A halogen lamp is mounted in the diffuser, powered by a direct current that passes through the metal arms. The base is cylindrical.
Produced by Artemide in 1980s and designed by Richard Sapper. Winner of the Compasso d'Oro award in 1979.
