Robert MacAulay Stevenson Paintings
Scottish, 1813-1876
Robert Macaulay Stevenson was a Scottish painter associated, like EA Hornel, with the later history of the Glasgow Boys. His elder brother was the Liberal politician Sir Daniel Macaulay Stevenson, a Lord Provost of Glasgow and Chancellor of the University of Glasgow. Stevenson was influenced by the work of the Barbizon school of painters, especially Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot. He worked from studios in Glasgow, at Montreuil-sur-Mer in France, at Kirkcudbright, and Bardowie Loch, East Dunbartonshire, Scotland.

Edward Antoon Portielje (8 February 1861, Antwerp – 18 December 1949, Antwerp) was a Belgian genre painter.
He was born to the painter Jan Portielje and his wife Eulalie (née Lemaire, 1828–1903). His older brother, Gerard, was also a genre painter.
His first art lessons came from his father. Then he attended the Royal Atheneum and, from 1873, took after-school classes at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts with Edward Dujardin. A large impressive original Victorian oil painting which was painted circa 1892 by Glasgow Boy Scottish artist Rober Macaulay Stevenson. This Romantic Scottish view is in fine condition and is framed in a Victorian gilt gallery frame. Influenced by the Barbizon School and the subtle oil paintings of Corot, it has a luminous glow associated with his landscapes. His works like this are visually stunning and verge on lyrical abstraction. He was a very innovative artist and years ahead of his time. The work depicts a sublime Scottish river landscape Nocturne by one of my favourite artists. A large painting in good condition and a lovely example of a 19th century Scottish landscape. Similar examples of his paintings are on display in Kelvingrove Art Gallery Glasgow.
