Roland Hinton Perry was a sculptor and painter committed to the Beaux-Arts tradition. Born in New York on January 25, 1870, he studied in Paris at the Académie Julian under Henri Chapu and Denys Puech, at the École des Beaux-Arts under Jean-Léon Gérôme and at the Académie Delécluse. Shortly after returning from his studies in France, he designed a series of bas-reliefs and a monumental fountain depicting the court of Neptune for the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. In 1905, he was hired to model the statue Commonwealth, which crowns the Pennsylvania Capitol Dome. Other commissioned work includes the relief panels at the New Amsterdam Theatre in New York and the Elk Fountain in Portland, Oregon. Perry was a member of the Grand Central Art Gallery and the National Sculpture Society. Many of his paintings are held by the Detroit Museum of Art. He is also the cousin of Lilla Cabot Perry and the father of Gwen Le Gallienne. Perry died on October 27, 1941, in New York.
