Rowland Suddaby Art

British, 1912-1972

Rowland Suddaby was born in Kimberworth, Yorkshire, England. Suddaby studied at the Sheffield College of Art, from 1926–30, winning a scholarship there. He came to London in 1931, aged 19, married young and found it a real struggle to make a living, in those early years. However, his work was noticed by Rex Nan Kivell and consequently, he had a successful show, at the Wertheim Gallery, in London, in 1935. They were always ready to give new talented artists a showcase for their work/ Then, Rowland had a series of shows, from 1936, at the Redfern Gallery. He was regarded, by the latter, as their artist successor to Christopher Wood and he painted vigorous and atmospheric pictures, in London and Cornwall, in the mid to late 1930s, some very much in the “Wood tradition”. These paintings, in both oils and watercolors, had spontaneity and a sureness of touch, which caught the imagination of critics and collectors alike.

After the outbreak of war, Suddaby moved with his wife, Elizabeth and their daughter, Joanna to the Suffolk countryside, settling near Sudbury. He found the landscape and coastline of East Anglia, an inspiration for the trademark pictures, for which he is now most widely known. Once seen, his paintings of Suffolk fields, ponds, trees and wooden fences, remain in the memory, as they are both so evocative of the landscape and so distinctly Rowland Suddaby. During the 1940s and 50s, Suddaby continued his still-life painting, which also became very popular with visitors, to shows at the Leger Galleries and more locally, at the Colchester Art Society, of which he was also a founder member.

By the start of the 1960s, Suddaby had become increasingly interested in abstraction and started to experiment with his work, mainly in watercolor and gouache. It is, perhaps indicative of the fact, that he regarded these works as mainly for his pleasure and not for exhibition, which is why  he didn't sign them. After his death, a rich collection of these abstracts came to light, work viewed by his family and others, as a very significant contribution to his life's work as an artist. Suddaby's work was acquired by many prominent collectors and public bodies, including the V & A Museum. There are 24 examples in the Government Art Collection alone.

“Roses in a Porcelain Pitcher”
By John C. Traynor
Located in Southampton, NY
Original oil on board still life painting of roses in a blue and white porcelain pitcher. Signed lower right by the artist and dated 1999. Condition is excellent. The painting is housed in a gold gallery frame with narrow linen liner. Overall framed measurements are 17.5 by 14.5 inches. Provenance: A Sarasota, Florida collector. John C. Traynor combines the 19th century element of atmosphere with the realistic, yet soft rendering of color and light reminiscent of the Dutch Masters to create his own distinctive style. John was born in 1961 and spent his early years growing up in Chester and Mendham, New Jersey. His classical training began at the Delbarton School in Morristown, New Jersey, and afterward he continued his art education at Paier College of Art in New Haven, Connecticut. As a merit scholar, John studied figure painting with Frank Mason at the Art Students League of New York. He concentrated on his understanding of form while studying drawing with Carroll Jones...

Expressionist Cafe Scene, Bagnoles, Au Casino, Circle of Fikret Saygi Moualla
Located in Cotignac, FR
Mid 20th Century French Expressionist gouache and watercolour on paper of a café scene. The painting is signed bottom right but as yet undeciphered. The work is titled to the back of the framing 'Bagnoles. Au Casino' and numbered. Presented in plain wood frame under glass, probably the artist's original framing. A lively and colourful scene of waiters serving their patrons in the bar of a casino. The servers are dressed in crisp linen jackets, black trousers, bow ties whilst balancing their trays of drinks. The customers are dressed in all their colourful finery for an evening at the tables. The artist has captured the feeling of the scene, noise, bustle, conversations and excitement. Bold splashes of colour animate the scene and create an almost Fauvist perspective. The painting in style, execution and subject matter is very much like the work of Fikret Muallâ who was painting at this period. Fikret Muallâ Saygı ) was a 20th-century avant-garde painter of Turkish descent. His work reflects influences from Expressionism and Fauvism, with subject matter focusing on Paris street life, social gatherings such as cafés and circuses. Though born in Istanbul he spent much of his career painting in Paris...

Rowland Suddaby (1912-1972) - Signed Gouache, Pen & Ink, Coastline Mountains
By Rowland Suddaby
Located in Corsham, GB
A superb mid 20th century painting by the highly acclaimed British artist Rowland Suddaby, depicting a dramatic coastline. Suddaby has captured the intensity of this jagged landscape through the use of hurried brushwork - indicating that this was painted en plein air. Further shadow and details have been added in black ink - again the mark making is energetic and instinctive, as Suddaby tries to capture the scene before the light changes. Multi hued clouds on the horizon suggest an approaching storm rolling off the sea. The painting is stamped to the lower right and excellently presented in a cream card mount and decorative gilt frame. Provenance: Ex collection of the artist's widow Elizabeth. This piece is accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Grant M...
