Ryan Mendoza Art

American, b. 1971
Ryan Mendoza is the artist behind The White House (2015), The Invitation (2016) and the noteworthy Rosa Parks House Project (2017). Described as a “rarity in the artworld” by author Milan Kundera, Mendoza’s artistic projects and paintings move between expressionism and realism, engaging Americana and historical references. Ryan has shown with a range of European galleries and museums including Massimo Minini (Brescia), White Cube (London), Galerie Lelong and Museo Madre (Naples). In 2015 his intimate artist diary "Tutto è mio" was published by renown Italian publisher Bompiani. Mendoza is guest lecturer at Columbia University, Brown University and RISD School of Design. He lives between Berlin (Germany) and Sicily with his wife Fabia and their son Dylan.

In his works he represents complex theatricality, models anatomies, doses colours, calibrates lights, draws on a rich archive of memories, confusing ancient pictorial wisdom and contemporary risks. The artist's attention is particularly focused on portraits in which he carries out distortions and alterations: he exhibits perspective disproportions, reveals anatomical dissonances, manifests dystonias between the characters in the foreground and the backgrounds.
