Simon Laurie Paintings

Scottish, b. 1964
Simon Laurie is a contemporary Scottish artist born in Glasgow in 1964. He studied at the Glasgow School of Art between 1982 and 1988, where he developed the foundations of his artistic practice. Laurie is best known for his colourful landscape and still-life paintings, which often feature Scottish landscapes, fish, boats, religious symbols and everyday objects. He mainly works with acrylic paint, building up many layers to create rich, textured surfaces. His distinctive style combines bold colour, simplified shapes and carefully balanced compositions, with influences from the Scottish Colourists and the St Ives School. Laurie became a member of the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolours in 1991 and the Royal Glasgow Institute in 2000. His work has been exhibited widely and is held in collections including Aberdeen Art Gallery and the Contemporary Art Society in London. Laurie has also had an important role within Scotland's art community. He was elected to the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolours (RSW) in 1991 and became a member of the Royal Glasgow Institute (RGI) in 2000. He later served as the RGI's Convener from 2005 to 2011. Throughout his career he has held solo exhibitions in Britain and internationally and has received several awards for his work.
