Hailing from the vibrant artistic hub of Brooklyn, Susan Washington was raised in a creative family that fostered her innate talent from a young age. At the tender age of seven, her Japanese godmother imparted to her the ancient art of sumi ink painting, igniting a lifelong passion for art and fashion. With a solid foundation rooted in both disciplines, Washington honed her skills within the bustling fashion industry of New York City for over 15 years before finding her home in the serene Pocono Mountains. “My recent work continues the exploration of shapes that originate in tailoring pattern pieces,” says Washington. “My works over time have become more structural in their compositions. I utilize textile cutouts that have been previously sewn and/or painted. I allow threads and frayed edges to act as ‘painterly’ gestures within a loose grid of contrasting shapes that jostle for position across the canvas. I enjoy the tensions where shapes meet and create negative space or where color overlaps and interacts.” Washington's modernist approach to Cubist-inspired artworks has gained international recognition for asymmetrical geometric elements that combine to form a complex, layered composition.
