This exceptional antique Georgian sterling silver tea caddy has an oval form. The surface of the tea caddy is encompassed with bright cut engraved fabric swag designs and floral festoons, suspended from impressive spiralling foliate anchor-points accented with pensile bud designs. Each spiralling motif flanks a shield shaped cartouche displaying the contemporary engraved initials 'WM' and surmounted with a ribbon style bow. This antique sterling silver toast rack has six compartments divided by a wirework frame; each divider pivots from the lower portion, allowing for variable spacing. The frame incorporates a central carrying handle, reflecting the same exposed rivet design as that the the dividers. This exceptional sterling silver articulated toast rack is supported with four bun style feet. The underside of the rack bears the retailer's mark 'Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Company Ltd, 112 Regent St W'. This antique Arts and Crafts style toast rack was designed by Christopher Dresser* and crafted by the silversmiths Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Co Ltd; this designer and maker are renowned, and known for producing fine work. The surface of this original cup is embellished with impressive chased decoration reproducing the Fine features of the fox’s snarling facial features and fur. The underside of the fox’s jaw features a convex oval cartouche bearing the contemporary engraved motto ‘Venationi Dattr’. The anterior of the rim is encompassed with a reed decorated border.
