Exceptional Mid-Century Modern Swedish floor vase from the Paprika series by ceramist and painter, Anna-Lisa Thomson for Upsala Ekeby, circa 1950s. The vase is in very good vintage condition with no cracks or chips and measures 6" D x 14.5" H. It is signed on the underside. Thomson is perhaps best known for her Paprika (Peppers) series, which she designed in 1948 and it is Paprika that would go on to become the best-selling series in Upsala-Ekeby’s history. Exquisitely crafted by renowned ceramist Ingrid Atterberg for Uppsala Ekeby, this black, white and grey chamotte vase with a distinctive handle and rough surface epitomizes mid-century Scandinavian modern design. Ingrid Atterberg (1920–2008) designed many classic pieces for Upsala-Ekeby between the 1940s and 1960s. One of her most well-known series is "Progresso," created in 1958. This collection consists of eight earthenware items, including vases and bowls, characterized by their textured surfaces and rustic appearance. Each piece is deeply stamped on the underside with "UE," "Sweden," "Abg," and the model number. The "Progresso" series was produced until 1959. The vase has the shape of a classical urn and a swelling shape with a unique hand-decorated finish, making each piece truly one-of-a-kind.
