Victoria Sauer Paintings

American

Victoria Sauer graduated from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga with her BFA in Painting and Drawing in the spring of 2020. While still experimenting with many mediums, she often approaches her painting practice in a hyperrealistic manner—heavily influenced by photorealism and surrealism. Working from photographs she takes herself, Victoria uses oil paint to represent subjects that are familiar, yet slightly otherworldly, as she navigates the space between conscious and subconscious. Victoria’s work has been shown nationally from Colorado to Georgia. She recently spent a year living on site as the Residency Fellow for Chattanooga arts organization Stove Works, and currently serves as a curator of online arts collective and residency, Mineral House Media. My work scrutinizes the unspoken and overlooked experiences of everyday life, the moments residing within a level of reality that we find familiar but frequently ignore. I am investigating the coexistence between wake life and sleep life, and the commonplace subject matter that often goes unnoticed in both levels of consciousness. Driven by the idea that dreams are complementary and continuous to waking thought processes, my careful observations from reality as well as diligent recollections from dreams aim to create a dialogue with each other, both connected by the same relevant memories and experiences from past to present. As dreams continue to process the same information from our waking lives in a more rudimentary visual language, I seek to bring attention to this intersection of the ordinary and the uncanny, the everyday and the absurd, the real and the surreal. It is at this point of convergence where we begin to question whether we are awake or asleep. By responding to my own experience of reality, I hope to open up a point of access to the viewer, following the notion that we are all living our own separate lives, but unified together in the shared experience of human existence—the collective unconscious.

GOD WANTS ME TO FORGIVE THEM!?! - Oil Painting of a Frightened Bob the Tomato

By Victoria Sauer

Located in Signal Mountain, TN

A scene of distress is depicted in this work regarding Bob the Tomato, a primary character in the acclaimed children’s animation, VeggieTales. “God Wants Me to Forgive Them!?!” challenges the formative life lessons we are taught from a young age that is not always easy to uphold. Based on a prophetic dream I had surrounding ideas of violence, familial relationships, estrangement, biblical references, revenge, and ultimately death, this painting begs...

I WOKE UP ASLEEP - Panoramic Oil Painting of a Bathroom Scene From a Dream

By Victoria Sauer

Located in Signal Mountain, TN

The interconnectivity between one's waking life and one’s dreams offers a point of convergence between the real and the surreal, the ordinary and the absurd. Daily observations are recycled into nightly visions, and consciousness becomes an in-between state. Experiences turn into memories which turn into dreams which turn into experiences. This piece appears as part of two-person exhibition with Jason Stout at Channel To Channel...

Mental Structures- 21st Century Contemporary Still-life Painting

By Daniela Astone

Located in Nuenen, Noord Brabant

Italian artist Daniela Astone lives and works in Florence. She enjoys working with live models and paints her works from observation, the classical approach she learned at the Academy in Florence and which she now teaches to her students. Daniela Astone graduated in 2004. She had her first solo exhibition shortly afterwards in the United States. Since then, the international attention of the Italian artist has only grown. The classical structure and narrative paintings show a technique that is special. Her style is virtuoso and her subjects are narrative. The keys are loose and subtle. Standing in front of a painting means watching...
