Axel W. Larsen, or W. Larsen, (British 1869-1946) mastered the genre of fox hunt paintings with hounds, red jackets and fine detailed horses in the latter years of the 19th century and into the 20th century. Fox hunting was an aristocratic sport, but also a serious endeavor to protect farm animals and pets from predators. By the nature of his work, Larsen's paintings were mostly collected by private owners though they also appear in galleries. His work included acrylics and oil on canvas. This painting is oil on canvas of a larger size than the average painting by this artist, with two Masters of the Hunt indicated by top hats. The horses are particularly fine, and the riders are focused on the task ahead of them. Fox hunting has been controversial in recent years, but in Larsen's time the paintings would have been hung with pride in the homes of landowners and riders. Larsen captures the horses in full stride, jumping hedges and clamoring down hillsides, with the hounds just ahead of them. These were dramatic and somewhat dangerous events, requiring great horsemanship and skill. The riders would have taken pride in paintings of their adventures. Larsen captures the drama and serious nature of The Hunt in the composition, size and details of this work.to
