Walter Williams Paintings

British, 1835-1906
Walter Williams was one of the four sons of Edward Williams. On 2 June 1857, Walter Williams married Jane Pearcy at St George’s, Hanover Square, not then a very salubrious district. His wife was the daughter of William Pearcy, a glass dealer, who was related to Clara Boddington. Jane and Walter lived in apparently comfortable circumstances at 8 Londsdale Terrace, Barnes. Walter Williams was a landscape painter working mainly in Wales but also in England. He was a member of the Williams family of painters and was the son of George Augustus Williams. He exhibited mainly at Suffolk Street, also at the Royal Academy between 1854 and 1880 as well as at the British Institution. Williams exhibited thirty-two paintings at the Royal Hibernian Academy and also at the Royal Society of British Artists, Manchester City Art Gallery and the Royal Society of Artists, Birmingham.

Conway Bay, Low Water
By Benjamin Williams Leader
Located in Wiscasett, ME
Oil on panel, signed and dated 1894 in the lower left and inscribed on the reverse. The frame measures 15.25" x 19.25". Leader was born in Worcester as Benjamin Leader Williams, the son, and first child of eleven children, of notable civil engineer Edward Leader Williams (1802–79) and Sarah Whiting (1801–88). His father was described as a "non conformist dissenter" and his mother was a Quaker – their marriage in an Anglican church resulted in them being disowned by the Society of friends. Leader's father was a keen amateur artist – a friend of John Constable – and Benjamin would often accompany him on sketching trips along the banks of the River Severn. His brother, also Edward Leader Williams, later became a notable civil engineer who was knighted for his work, and is now mainly remembered for designing Manchester ship canal...

19th Century pair of French townscape oil paintings
By Henry Schafer
Located in Nr Broadway, Worcestershire
**PLEASE NOTE: EACH PAINTING INCLUDING THE FRAME MEASURES 15 INCHES x 13 INCHES** Henry Schafer German/British, (1841-c.1914) Chartres, France & Metz, Lorraine Oil on canvas, pair, both signed Image size: 10 inches x 8 inches (each) Size including frame: 15 inches x 13 inches (each) A lovely pair of French townscape paintings featuring Cathedrals by Henry Schafer. The first offers a view of Metz Cathedral and other medieval buildings from the river Moselle. On the right, figures can be seen at a market stall whilst others walk down a street. Meanwhile to the left, a boat is shown docking at a quayside in front of an archway. The other painting is of Chartres Cathedral seen from a cobbled town square lined with Medieval buildings. Two figures are depicted next to a market stall on the left as others chat or make their way towards the square along a lane to the right. Henry Schafer was born in Hanover, Germany in 1841. Although little is recorded about his upbringing, he was known to have studied at the l'Ecole National de Beaux-Arts in Paris. After leaving art school, he travelled throughout Europe painting town scenes and buildings of Northern France, Belgium and Germany. By 1864, Schafer had travelled to England with his wife Theresa, to work in London where they settled and started a family. All four of their children were born in England. One of his daughters Emilie Anna Schafer (1871-1937) became a painter and art teacher. Around 1871, the family were living at 53 Vauxhall Bridge Road and in 1881 were recorded as residing at 6, Sophia Terrace, Beulah Road, Thornton Heath in Surrey, with Henry continuing to work as an artist. By 1891, he had moved to 7 St Peters Road in Islington where he lived for the rest of his life. Sometime around the turn of the century, he became a British subject. Schafer is believed to have died in London c1914. Many of his works depict the architecture of gothic cathedrals and churches, as in these two fine examples. He also produced interior studies of churches. Schafer's style resembles that of Alfred Montague...

A very fine large scale Victorian oil painting depicting this tranquil river landscape. A lovely pastoral scene, with figures angling, a distant windmill to the far left and cattle grazing on the far river bank. Painted on this vast scale, it is almost like a window looking out over the scene... Walter Williams (1834-1906) was an English landscape painter during the Victorian era, and a member of the famous Williams family of painters. He was born George Walter Williams on 29 November 1834 in London, being the son of the well-known Victorian landscape painter George Augustus Williams and his wife Caroline Smith. Some sources attribute to him a twin brother named George. However, as his baptismal record proves, George and Walter are the same person. He became a painter like his father, and married another painter Jane Pearcy (1832-1872), with whom he had two children - Florence Ada Williams (1859-1927) and Cyril Stanley Williams - both of whom became painters as well, but neither of whom achieved any measurable degree of success as artists. Walter remarried two more times, after the deaths of each of his previous wives. Walter Williams generally painted subjects similar to those by the rest of his family, with bodies of still water next to dense thickets of trees against backdrops of hills and clouds. His paintings tend to be dark in tone with a profusion of green. By contrast, Walter Heath Williams painted landscapes that are much lighter and brighter in tone, characterized by yellows and light browns, his favorite subjects being farm fields with corn stalks and piles of hay. Williams lived at 8 Lonsdale Terrace in Surrey for most of his life, and he exhibited a total of 81 paintings at the Royal Academy (10 works), the British Institution (14 works) and the Society of British Artists (47 works). His first wife Jane Williams...
