Available for sale from Big Sky Fine Art; this original oil painting by William Crampton, dating from around the turn of the 19th to 20th centuries. The painting is presented and supplied in a mid 20th century ornate frame. The painted surfaces have benefitted from some restoration including two small hole repairs, cleaning and conservation, which took place in 2008 on our instructions. The repairs are not visible from the front but are evident on the rear. The painting is signed lower left. William James Smith Crampton was born in Manchester. He is known to be a self-taught artist who settled in the North Riding of Yorkshire. He shared a studio with the ill-disciplined and tragic artist Clarence Roe 1850 – 1909 where they both painted very similar subject matter and in a similar style using identical techniques. The 1911 census of England has Crampton living at Northgates in Wetherby with his wife Mary Jane and son William Ernest. In his later life, he moved to Easingwold where he was to eventually die.
