Pair of 19th century landscape oil paintings of the River Avon & Berwyn Valley

John Bates Noel

On the Avon & In the Berwin Valley
Oil on canvas, pair, both signed, also signed & inscribed verso
Image size: 12 inches x 16 inches (each)
Size including frame: 19 inches x 23 inches (each)
John Bates Noel was born John Noel Bates in Worcester in 1870. He was the son of the landscape artist David Bates (1840-1921) but later on changed his professional name to avoid confusion. The family lived in Worcestershire as well as in Birmingham and it was highly likely that he was encouraged and taught by his father as their subject matter and style bear similarities, although John’s compositions tend to be more fluid and looser.
By the turn of the century Noel was living in Malvern where he also taught art. He specialised in painting the rugged landscapes in and around the West Midlands, Worcestershire and North Wales. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1893-1909 and at the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists between 1892-1919. He also exhibited works at some of the major galleries of the time including the Manchester City Art Gallery and the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool.
The building in the painting 'On the Avon' is believed to be that of St Margaret's Church at Wolston in Warwickshire. The structures at the front of the church appear to be thatched hay ricks, which are similar to ones seen in an old postcard of the church seen from the river Avon...

Antique Scottish Highland Loch landscape, with sunlit streaming onto the water
By Francis E. Jamieson
Located in Woodbury, CT
Francis Jamieson was a painter in oil and watercolor of highland landscapes and coastal scenes. (The work of this highly prolific artist is curious since the oils and watercolors have two quite distinctive styles and subject matter. The oil paintings are most frequently seen and these are highland landscapes or loch scenes - sometimes they appear to be signed with pseudonyms such as 'W. Richards' and 'Phil Hips' - the location is usually inscribed on the reverse. The watercolors are often coastal scenes with boats and figures on a shore, painted in a more traditional Victorian style, and possibly pre-date the oils. F. E. Jamiesons's beach scenes were published as postcards around 1920 by G. Ajelli & Co. of London on a textured card to give the appearance of oils.
Jamieson is known to have traveled widely in the South of England between the wars selling his work but does not appear to have exhibited.) This quote in parentheses is taken from Jeremy Wood's excellent book 'Hidden Talents - A Dictionary of Neglected Artists Working 1880-1950'.
-
Work by Francis Jamieson can be seen at the usual sites. Please note that on all these sites you will find F. E. Jamieson variously listed as Francis E. Jamieson, F.E.Jamieson, Frank E. Jamieson, Frederick E. Jamieson etc. You may also find some listings under his various pseudonyms of Arnould Pienne, Charles Maurice, Graham Williams...

William Langley
Painter in oil of rural landscapes and coastal scenes who was working in the early 1900s. The subjects of this prolific artist included views in Cornwall, the South of England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland. Among the titles of known works are 'On the Lledr', 'Wee Bridge, Killarney', 'In the Glen', and 'Sunshine after Rain, a Village in the Thames'. The work shows a distinct similarity to that of several artists working at the time and the signature could possibly be a pseudonym. The pictures are often large and decorative and have become increasingly popular in recent years.
