William Preston Phelps Art

American, 1848-1921

William Preston Phelps was born in Chesham, New Hampshire, on March 6, 1848. After studying in Europe for seven years, he returned to set up a studio in Lowell and became well known for his plein air New England landscape, animal and harbor scene paintings. He eventually moved back to his birthplace in Chesham, where he painted many scenes of Mount Monadnock and landscapes of the Merrimack Valley. Phelps died on January 6, 1923, in Dublin, Ireland.

Richard Wedderspoon was an important member of the New Hope Art Colony as both an Impressionist and Modernist painter. Wedderspoon was not only a respected painter, but also a teacher who spent summers at his Bucks County home and the school year at Syracuse University where he was Professor of painting. He was born in Red Bank, New Jersey and first studied art at the Carnegie Institute in Pittsburgh. He continued his studies at the Corcoran School of Art in Washington, and at age twenty four, he enrolled at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts studying with Henry McCarter and Daniel Garber.
