Early 19th Century British Academic Male Nude Oil Painting, After William Etty
Early 19th Century British Academic Male Nude Oil Painting, After William Etty

Early 19th Century British Academic Male Nude Oil Painting, After William Etty

Located in Nottingham, GB

A striking 19th-century British School academic study of a standing male nude, executed in oil on canvas and displaying the strong influence of William Etty R.A. (1787–1849) and the British academic figure-painting tradition. The male figure is shown almost life-size within the composition, standing in three-quarter profile while firmly grasping a staff with both hands. The restrained pose allows the artist to concentrate on anatomical structure, musculature and the effects of light across the human form. Warm flesh tones emerge dramatically against a loosely worked, dark atmospheric background, giving the figure considerable sculptural presence. The painting demonstrates confident observation and accomplished draughtsmanship, particularly in the modelling of the shoulders, arms and torso. Its direct study from the nude is characteristic of the academic life-room tradition that formed an essential part of formal artistic training during the Victorian period. The reverse bears a Winsor & Newton canvas stamp, providing an additional period detail associated with British artists' materials. Presented unframed, the painting retains an appealing untouched character. The surface displays age-related wear, abrasions and areas of paint loss, particularly around the margins, consistent with its age and history as an academic study. An imposing and highly decorative example of Victorian British figurative painting...
