Japanese Edo Musha Ningyō Samurai Warrior Doll with Armor, circa 1750

Located in New York, NY

Ningyō Samurai Warrior Doll with Armor, circa 1750 A rare and exceptional Japanese Musha Ningyō (Samurai Warrior Doll), dating to the Edo Period (1603–1868), circa 1750. This outstanding 18th-century warrior doll represents the finest tradition of Japanese Musha Ningyō artistry. These ceremonial warrior figures were traditionally displayed during Tango no Sekku (Boys’ Day Festival), symbolizing bravery, protection, strength, and the noble virtues of the samurai class. The figure features a beautifully carved wooden head finished with fine white gofun — a traditional Japanese technique using layers of refined shell pigment to achieve a smooth, luminous surface. The powerful facial expression, sharply painted eyes, and commanding presence reflect the exceptional craftsmanship of Edo Period doll makers. The warrior is presented seated on a traditional military camp stool and dressed in elaborate samurai armor with intricate metal fittings, lacquered elements, and richly detailed decoration. The impressive helmet features a dramatic crescent moon crest with a dragon ornament, symbols historically associated with power, courage, and protection. The figure retains its original saihai battle command baton, carried by samurai leaders to direct troops. The costume is composed of luxurious silk brocade textiles with beautifully patterned robes, detailed armor plates, and faux fur boots...

Signed Chinese Blanc de Chine Eight Immortals, Qing c.1890
Signed Chinese Blanc de Chine Eight Immortals, Qing c.1890

Signed Chinese Blanc de Chine Eight Immortals, Qing c.1890

Located in New York, NY

Chinese Blanc de Chine Porcelain Group of the Eight Immortals, Signed, Late Qing Dynasty, circa 1890–Early 20th Century An exceptional and finely modeled Chinese Blanc de Chine porcelain group depicting the legendary Eight Immortals (Ba Xian), one of the most beloved and auspicious subjects in Chinese art. Executed in luminous Dehua porcelain during the late Qing Dynasty, this impressive sculptural composition exemplifies the refined craftsmanship for which Blanc de Chine ceramics have been celebrated for centuries. The intricate group portrays the Eight Immortals gathered beneath flowering peach trees, each figure rendered with remarkable individuality and expressive character. The immortals are shown holding or accompanied by their traditional attributes, while several young attendants present offerings of longevity peaches, symbols of immortality and eternal happiness. The beautifully balanced composition is animated by flowing robes, expressive facial features, and graceful gestures that bring the legendary Daoist figures vividly to life. At the center stands Shoulao (Shou Xing), the God of Longevity, distinguished by his flowing beard and benevolent expression. Surrounding him are fellow immortals and youthful attendants engaged in scenes of celebration and o ffering, while blossoming peach branches rise behind them, reinforcing the theme of longevity and divine blessing. The entire sculpture is masterfully executed in the creamy-white porcelain characteristic of Dehua (Blanc de Chine), whose soft, luminous glaze enhances every finely modeled detail. The subtle translucency of the porcelain, combined with the sculptural depth of the composition, creates an object of remarkable elegance and visual harmony. The sculpture is signed on the reverse, further attesting to its quality and artistic merit. According to provenance, the piece was possibly formerly in a German gallery or museum collection, adding to its historical interest. Large, museum-quality Blanc de Chine figural groups of this complexity are rarely encountered, making this an outstanding acquisition for collectors of Chinese porcelain, Daoist art...
