Georges Sauveur Maury was born in Saint Denis, north of Paris, in 1872. From these beginnings, he moved to Paris, where he was a pupil of Ferdinand Humbert (1842-1934), Alphonse-Alexis Morlot (1838-1918) and the master of floral painting dear to Van Gogh, Ernest Quost (1842-1931).
