Frame size 27.6 inches x 36 inches ( 70cm x 91.5cm ). Available for sale is this original watercolor by the British artist Frank Egginton which dates from the 1970s. The painting is presented and supplied in a sympathetic contemporary frame (which is shown in these photographs), mounted using conservation materials and behind non-reflective Tru Vue UltraVue® UV70 glass. This vintage painting is in very good condition, it wants for nothing and is supplied ready to hang and display. The watercolor is signed lower left. Frank Egginton was a British contemporary landscape artist, synonymous with watercolours of the Irish countryside, particularly county Donegal. He came from an artistic family, with his father being the well-known artist Wycliffe Egginton (1875-1951), and his nephew was the artist Robert Egginton. His daughter and son in law have run The Gallery in Dunfanaghy, Co. Donegal for many years. Frank (officially Francis John) Egginton was born in Wallasey in the county of Cheshire on 10 November 1908. When he was a baby the family moved to Newton Abbott in Devon, as his father had been appointed headmaster of the College of Art there. Frank was educated at Newton College, and then Newton Abbott College of Art, and Exeter School of Art. He then spent some time perfecting his drawing whilst working in an architect’s office. Edouard Julien was an accomplished French painter and lithographer, and long-term curator of the Toulouse-Lautrec Museum in Albi. As a scholar of Toulouse-Lautrec he became an art writer who was sought after by publishers all over the world. Julien was born in Albi, in the Occitanie region of France in 1883. He had an uncle who was a painter and his parents ran a printing house which specialised in art editions and the printing of lithographs. This would have given the young Edouard a taste for art and a sound understanding of artistic techniques. At 17 he entered the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Toulouse and studied there throughout 1900 and 1901. He then returned to Albi and took care of the family business, although he also pursued his love of art by working as an artist. By 1903 he was at the Academy in Albi, founded by Bernard-Joseph Artigue, where he became friends with the artist Henri Gourc. In 1928 Julien left Albi again for Paris where he enrolled in the Julian Academy, but he was quickly told that he was an artist, not a student and that they had nothing to teach him about the technique of painting. He therefore rented a studio and worked hard, making friends and exhibiting his works with success. As an artist Julien loved working in the open air, and his works showed extreme sensitivity. He travelled widely within France to work, and particularly loved the Basque Country, where he met his wife. He also travelled to paint the magical landscapes of Spain, Flanders and North Africa. At some point Julien returned to Albi, which was also the birthplace of another now more famous French artist whom he admired, namely Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. This artist was to feature most prominently in the professional life of Edouard Julien. In 1922 the Toulouse-Lautrec Museum was inaugurated in the prestigious setting of the Palais de la Berbie in Albi. This 13th century building was originally the Bishop’s Palace of Albi Cathedral, next to which it stands. It is dedicated mainly to the work of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and, thanks to a bequest from his parents, houses the largest public collection in the world devoted to this artist. Available for sale; this antique reproductive plate (usually a lithograph or heliogravure) after the original competition drawing is annotated Premier Grand Prix De Rome and is dated in the margin 1906. The print is presented and supplied in a sympathetic contemporary wooden frame (which is shown in these photographs) and behind glass. This antique print is in good material condition with age toning to the paper along with a scattering of aged blemishes. It is supplied ready to hang and display. The print carries a dedication lower right in the margin. An incomplete (partial) ink stamp in the lower left hand corner makes reference to an Anvers (Antwerp) institution. This finely executed early 20th-century figure print of a drawing is of the Académie d’Homme genre (traditional academic nude study). It depicts a nude male figure in dynamic contrapposto, shown mid-action as he prepares to throw an arrow. The pose combines classical balance with controlled movement, reflecting the rigorous standards of French academic training at the turn of the century. The image is a period print, likely produced as a lithograph or heliogravure, after an original competition drawing. It is annotated “Premier Grand Prix de Rome” and dated 1906 in the margin, indicating that the original of this work was a submission to the prestigious Prix de Rome competition, the highest accolade for academic artists in France. Such works were commonly reproduced for study, reference and institutional circulation and it is likely that this reproduction was made in the same year, or shortly afterwards. Rendered with careful anatomical precision, the figure demonstrates a deep understanding of musculature, proportion and weight distribution, hallmarks of École des Beaux-Arts instruction.
