Pair of French Oak and Rush Lounge Armchairs, France, 1950s
Pair of French Oak and Rush Lounge Armchairs, France, 1950s

Pair of French Oak and Rush Lounge Armchairs, France, 1950s

Located in Almelo, NL

Pair of French Oak and Rush Lounge Armchairs, France, 1950s A highly characterful pair of French lounge armchairs dating from the 1950s, crafted from solid oak with handwoven rush seats and backrests. The chairs have a distinctly sculptural quality, most notably expressed in the beautifully shaped armrests. Each arm flows organically outward from the angled backrest in a long, gentle curve before terminating in a softly rounded, downward-sweeping end. This elegant detail gives the otherwise robust construction an unusually fluid and inviting character. The solid oak frames have developed a rich, warm brown patina over time, highlighting the grain and handmade character of the wood. Slightly splayed legs and gently inclined backrests create a relaxed stance, while the low horizontal stretchers provide both structural strength and a pleasing architectural rhythm. The natural rush provides a beautiful contrast to the darker oak. The seats are intricately woven, while the backrests are composed of two separate woven panels, creating a subtle open space between them. Viewed from behind, the craftsmanship of the rush work becomes particularly apparent and adds another decorative dimension to the chairs. Their combination of rustic materials, expressive craftsmanship and restrained sculptural lines places these chairs firmly within the tradition of French mid-century modern and French rustic modernist furniture of the post-war period. The relatively low seat height and generous armrests give them the relaxed proportions of lounge chairs rather than conventional dining chairs. They would work particularly well beside a fireplace, around a low table, in a library or as sculptural occasional seating in a contemporary interior. A beautiful and increasingly desirable pair of French 1950s armchairs, combining honest natural materials with particularly expressive craftsmanship. France, circa 1950s. Condition Good original vintage condition with an attractive age-related patina. The oak frames show expected traces of age and previous use, including surface marks, scratches, variations in tone and areas of wear. These characteristics contribute to the authentic appearance of the chairs. The woven rush shows age and signs of use but remains an important part of the original character of the pieces. Please refer closely to the detailed photographs for the condition of the rush and wooden frames. Dimensions Height: 80 cm / 31.50 in Width: 60 cm / 23.62 in Depth: 60 cm / 23.62 in Seat Height: 35 cm / 13.78 in Details Country of Origin: France Period: 1950s Style: French Mid-Century Modern / Rustic Modernist Materials: Solid oak and woven rush Color: Dark patinated oak / natural rush Number of Pieces: 2 Sold As: Pair Condition: Good vintage condition Wear: Consistent with age and use Packing & Worldwide Shipping Professional packing and worldwide shipping available. French Beech and Patinated Cognac Leather Armchair in the Style of Maison Regain, 1970s A striking French armchair from the 1970s, executed in solid beech wood with a beautifully patinated cognac leather seat and backrest, designed in the style of Maison Regain. The chair displays the robust yet refined aesthetic associated with French design of the period and particularly with the work of Maison Regain. Its architectural solid beech frame is characterized by substantial rectangular sections, exposed construction and distinctive X-shaped cross braces along the sides. The warm-toned beech combines beautifully with the thick cognac leather. The leather has developed a rich natural patina over decades of use, with attractive tonal variations, surface markings and signs of age that give the chair considerable depth and authenticity. The combination of solid natural wood, leather and strongly articulated construction gives the piece a distinctly French modernist character, balancing rustic craftsmanship with sculptural geometry. Its compact proportions and strong silhouette make this an appealing occasional or accent chair, equally suitable for a contemporary, modernist, Brutalist or more eclectic interior. A characterful example of 1970s French design in the manner of Maison Regain, distinguished by its architectural construction and beautifully aged natural materials. France, circa 1970s. Condition Good original vintage condition with a beautiful age-related patina. The solid beech frame is sturdy and shows normal traces of age and use, including minor marks, scratches and tonal variations. The cognac leather displays an attractive natural patina with variations in color, surface wear, marks and traces of previous use. These characteristics contribute to the authentic vintage appearance of the chair. Please refer to the detailed photographs for an accurate impression of its condition. Rainer Daumiller Sculptural Pine Dining Chairs, Denmark, 1970s, Set of 6

Located in Almelo, NL

Rainer Daumiller Sculptural Pine Dining Chairs, Denmark, 1970s, Set of 6 A highly decorative set of six sculptural dining chairs designed by Rainer Daumiller, Denmark, circa 1970s. Crafted entirely from solid pine, the chairs are characterized by their warm natural appearance, beautifully pronounced wood grain and softly rounded construction. Each chair features a particularly attractive sculpted solid-pine backrest, gently curved to follow the body and supported by two cylindrical uprights. The solid wooden seats have similarly softened edges, while the simple round legs and stretchers create a robust yet remarkably balanced silhouette. The natural pine has developed a beautiful honey-colored patina over the decades. Variations in grain, knots and coloration make every chair subtly individual and emphasize the organic character of the set. Daumiller's furniture from this period represents the Scandinavian approach to honest construction and natural materials. Rather than concealing the structure, these chairs celebrate the solid pine itself, allowing the grain, knots and sculptural shaping of the timber to become an essential part of the design. Despite their substantial solid-wood construction, these examples have particularly compact and practical proportions. At only 45 cm (17.72 in) wide, they work exceptionally well around smaller dining tables as well as larger dining settings where six chairs need to fit comfortably. The chairs remain in good vintage condition with an attractive aged surface and expected traces of use consistent with age. Minor variations, marks and patina contribute to their authentic vintage character. Please refer to the detailed photographs. A strong and collectible example of 1970s Danish organic modernism, combining Scandinavian simplicity, functionality and sculptural craftsmanship. Price is for the complete set of six chairs. French Patinated Beech and Rush Two-Seat Bench, France, 1950s

Located in Almelo, NL

French Patinated Beech and Rush Two-Seat Bench, France, 1950s A charming and unusually compact French two-seat bench, crafted in patinated beechwood with a handwoven natural rush seat, dating from the 1950s. Measuring only 91 cm (35.83 in) wide, this petite bench offers comfortable seating for two while occupying remarkably little space. Its compact proportions make it particularly suitable for smaller interiors, apartments, hallways, bedrooms, dressing rooms or as an occasional fireside seat. The solid beechwood frame features two individually defined backrests, each detailed with an elegant row of turned spindle supports. Sculptural armrests, turned stretchers and a central supporting leg give the bench a distinctive French rustic character and an attractive architectural quality. The beechwood has developed a beautiful warm patina through decades of use, with subtle variations in tone and surface wear that emphasize the authentic vintage character. The darker aged wood contrasts beautifully with the lighter natural rush seat. Despite its modest dimensions, the bench has a strong decorative presence and works equally well in French Provincial, rustic, Mediterranean, farmhouse and more contemporary interiors. The bench remains in good vintage condition with age-related wear and patina consistent with its age and use. The rush seat is intact and usable, with natural signs of age and wear, particularly visible underneath. Please refer to the detailed photographs. A particularly appealing piece of mid-20th-century French country furniture, combining traditional craftsmanship, sculptural detailing and highly practical compact proportions. Jan Armgardt Papageno Sculptural Swivel Lounge Chair for Leolux Netherlands 1990

Jan Armgardt Papageno Sculptural Swivel Lounge Chair for Leolux, Netherlands, 1990s An iconic Papageno lounge chair, designed by German designer Jan Armgardt for Leolux in 1993. The Papageno is one of Leolux's most recognizable designs and is characterized by its exuberant organic silhouette, generous curved armrests and distinctive sculptural presence. Armgardt conceived the chair with an intentionally playful and almost anthropomorphic character, resulting in a design that remains instantly recognizable more than three decades after its introduction. This example features a dark taupe/brown suede upholstery combined with the characteristic sculptural aluminium swivel base. The organically shaped seat shell appears to float above the unusual star-shaped pedestal, giving the substantial chair a surprisingly light appearance. The sweeping backrest, rounded wings and curved front section flow almost continuously into one another. Decorative stitched seams emphasize the chair's organic geometry. The Papageno has remained part of the Leolux design vocabulary since its introduction in 1993 and represents an expressive example of Dutch postmodern and organic design of the 1990s. A highly decorative statement chair suitable for both contemporary and vintage interiors. Designer & Manufacturer Designer: Jan Armgardt Manufacturer: Leolux Model: Papageno Design year: 1993 Country: The Netherlands Period: 1990s Style: Postmodern / Organic Modern / Dutch Design Materials Suede upholstery Aluminium swivel base Internal upholstered frame Dimensions Width: 90 cm / 35.43 in Height: 86 cm / 33.86 in Depth: 75 cm / 29.53 in Seat Height: 42 cm / 16.54 in Condition Good vintage condition with wear consistent with age and use. The chair retains its existing dark suede upholstery, which shows visible signs of use including variations in color, rubbing, marks and surface wear, as shown in the photographs. The aluminium swivel base shows normal age-related wear. Due to the condition of the existing suede, professional reupholstery is recommended. The chair provides an excellent opportunity for reupholstery while retaining the distinctive original seams, proportions and sculptural character of the Papageno design. Upholstery Option Professional reupholstery can be arranged upon request. The Papageno works particularly well in high-quality suede, nubuck or soft leather, which emphasizes its flowing organic shape. A premium wool or textured upholstery fabric would also provide a more contemporary interpretation. For this chair, I would personally choose warm cognac/camel suede or nubuck. That would look especially strong against the aluminium base. Packing & Worldwide Shipping Professional worldwide shipping is available. For suitable road or container transportation, the chair can be professionally soft-packed free of charge. For overseas or air freight, we can arrange a custom-made ISPM 15 certified wooden crate for maximum protection during transport. Worldwide shipping by road, air or sea freight can be arranged. Please contact us for a shipping quotation to your destination. Jan Armgardt, Leolux Papageno...
