Lounge chair by Móveis Gerdau in Porto Alegre, Brazil circa 1950.
By Móveis Gerdau
Located in Langemark-Poelkapelle, BE
Rare adjustable lounge chair manufactured by Móveis Gerdau in Porto Alegre, Brazil, circa 1950. The chair is constructed from bentwood and laminated wood and combines the elegant curved lines characteristic of Gerdau’s production. The backrest can be adjusted through different positions, while the integrated footrest folds forward, transforming the upright armchair into an extended reclining chair. Particularly interesting is the use of laminated wooden panels for the seat, backrest and footrest. Laminated wood was used on several other Móveis Gerdau designs from this period. The sweeping bentwood armrests form a continuous line around the sides of the chair and give the piece a distinctive profile. Its functional construction and restrained organic forms place it within the development of Brazilian furniture design around the mid-20th century. The chair retains its original Móveis Gerdau / Walter Gerdau...
