A remarkably long and atmospheric French antique bench dating from around 1900, made from solid pine and retaining a beautifully dry, pale and naturally weathered surface that defines true wabi-sabi character. The narrow plank seat measures 219 centimetres in length and rests on two broad sculptural trestle supports whose boldly shaped profiles and wide feet give this French pine bench a strong architectural silhouette with an almost primitive, folk art quality. Unlike many traditional trestle benches, this long rustic bench has no long connecting stretcher between the supports, a restrained construction original to the piece that gives it a particularly open and sculptural appearance. Its greatest quality is the beautifully lived-in, timeworn pine surface. Decades of use have softened every edge and built up a layered patina of faded timber, darker worn areas, scratches, stains, old cracks and natural colour variation. Several inset wooden patches remain visible in the seat, honestly documenting old repairs rather than disguising them. The pale, weathered top contrasts warmly with the deeper brown tone of the shaped supports and feet. This is not a polished or heavily restored antique trestle bench...
