Rare Monumental French Gothic All-Wrought Iron Double Castle Door
Rare Monumental French Gothic All-Wrought Iron Double Castle Door

Rare Monumental French Gothic All-Wrought Iron Double Castle Door

Located in Doha, QA

Among the rarest survivals of medieval architectural ironwork, this monumental pair of Gothic castle doors (one door-two wings) represents an extraordinary achievement in the art of the medieval blacksmith. Entirely hand forged from wrought iron and assembled with individually forged rivets, the doors embody the engineering skill, defensive requirements, and uncompromising craftsmanship of late medieval France. Unlike the overwhelming majority of surviving castle doors- which rely on heavy oak cores reinforced with iron straps- these remarkable examples are constructed almost entirely of wrought iron plates, braces, and structural members. Such an approach demanded immense quantities of iron, exceptional technical expertise, and hundreds of hours of skilled labor, making doors of this type exceptionally costly to produce and reserved only for the most important fortified spaces. Their bold Gothic silhouette, terminating in a pointed arch, corresponds to the original medieval stone opening from which they originate. Massive diagonal reinforcing members, broad riveted iron plates, forged hinge assemblies, and individually hand-worked rivets form a powerful architectural composition that is as sculptural as it is functional. Every surface tells the story of more than five centuries of existence. The wrought iron retains its rich historic patina, displaying centuries of oxidation, forge textures, hammer marks, laminated iron surfaces, and evidence of traditional forge-welding techniques. The irregular rivet heads, overlapping iron plates, and subtle variations in thickness reveal unmistakable hand craftsmanship impossible to reproduce through modern industrial methods. Architecturally, these doors were almost certainly created for one of the most secure areas of a medieval fortress or château. Their all-iron construction suggests installation within a treasury, armoury, prison, fortified vault, strong room, or other location where maximum security and resistance to fire were essential. Such commissions were reserved for castles of considerable importance and required the work of master blacksmiths operating at the highest level of their craft. Stylistically and technically, the doors date most convincingly to the late 15th to early 16th century (circa 1480–1530). However, the conservative nature of medieval architectural ironwork, together with the Gothic form and traditional forging methods, leaves open the possibility that portions of the construction- or the original commission itself- may extend into the 14th century, making these doors potentially even earlier than their generally accepted dating. Authentic medieval all-wrought-iron castle doors...

Antique Rare Medieval Illuminated Vellum Psalm Leaf, Italy, c.1350–1450
Antique Rare Medieval Illuminated Vellum Psalm Leaf, Italy, c.1350–1450

Antique Rare Medieval Illuminated Vellum Psalm Leaf, Italy, c.1350–1450

Located in Doha, QA

A beautifully preserved medieval illuminated manuscript leaf on vellum (animal skin), dating to circa 1350–1450, originating from Europe. Italy. This striking example of Gothic craftsmanship features elegant textura script meticulously hand-lettered in rich brown ink across both sides, accompanied by vibrant rubrication and finely rendered initials in red and blue. The recto is adorned with a large illuminated initial, intricately decorated with geometric and foliate motifs, while delicate pen flourishes extend into the margins, demonstrating the skill and artistry of a professional scriptorium. The verso continues with carefully structured text and ornamentation, revealing the continuity of the manuscript’s original use. The presence of decoration on both sides highlights its authenticity as a working liturgical page rather than a later decorative fragment. Executed on supple vellum, the surface retains a beautiful natural patina, with subtle tonal variations and signs of age that enhance its historical character. The text is drawn from the Latin Psalms, traditionally used in devotional practice, adding both spiritual and cultural significance. The text translates in English as: “Lord, hear my prayer, and let my cry come to you. Do not hide your face from me; in the day when I am in trouble, incline your ear to me. On whatever day I call upon you, hear me quickly. For my days have vanished like smoke, and my bones have dried up like firewood. I am stricken like grass and my heart has withered, so that I forget to eat my bread. From the voice of my groaning, my bones cling to my flesh. I have become like a pelican in the wilderness; I am like an owl among the ruins. I lie awake, and I am like a solitary sparrow on a rooftop. All the day my enemies reproach me; those who praised me swear against me. For I have eaten ashes like bread and mingled my drink with weeping.” Presented in a custom frame, this rare...

Antique Gothic Rare Illuminated Antiphonal Leaves on Vellum, Italy 14th-15th C.

Antique Gothic Rare Illuminated Antiphonal Leaves on Vellum, Italy 14th-15th C.

Located in Doha, QA

A refined and visually compelling collection of two large-format illuminated from both sides manuscript leaves on vellum, originating from Italian choir books of the late 14th to early 15th century. These leaves, once part of monumental liturgical codices used for communal singing, exemplify the artistry and devotional culture of the medieval church. Each leaf is executed in bold Gothic script with square Gregorian notation on red staves, designed for legibility at a distance. The collection includes examples from a Psalter and Antiphonal, encompassing both textual and musical elements of the liturgy. The group is distinguished by its range of illumination, from finely ornamented initials in red and blue with delicate penwork flourishing, to a more elaborate historiated composition depicting the Adoration of the Magi, rendered in vivid pigments with gold accents and intricate vine borders. This figurative leaf reflects a higher level of artistic sophistication and devotional narrative, typical of important ecclesiastical commissions. Texts include passages from the Psalms (notably Psalm 26, “Dominus illuminatio mea”) and chants associated with major liturgical moments such as Epiphany and the Office of the Dead. The musical leaves preserve the rhythmic structure of Gregorian chant, with neumatic notation carefully aligned to the text. Executed on fine animal (sheep) skin (vellum), the leaves display the natural undulation and patina characteristic of medieval parchment...

Antique Hand-Painted Renaissance Cards, Austria, Circa 1550-1590

Antique Hand-Painted Renaissance Cards, Austria, Circa 1550-1590

Located in Doha, QA

An exceptional and visually arresting set of twelve early playing cards, dating to the late 16th century and originating from Austria. Executed in traditional woodblock print and delicately hand-painted, this rare group beautifully reflects the transition from the Late Gothic period into the Early Renaissance in Central Europe. Each card displays remarkable period detail, particularly in the finely rendered court figures dressed in late 15th-century attire- short doublets and jerkins, tight hose, puffed and slashed sleeves, feathered caps, and stylized armor elements. The costumes embody the expressive elegance of Late Gothic fashion while hinting at the emerging Renaissance aesthetic north of the Alps. The surviving hand-coloring- earthy reds, deep blues, muted greens, and warm ochres- enhances the strong linear quality of the woodcut technique. The natural wear, surface patina, and scattered losses visible in the images attest to the cards’ age and authentic use, adding to their historical character and collectible appeal. The sizes of the cards are irregular. The set includes a mix of pip and court cards, with beautifully stylized suit symbols and dynamic figural compositions. The expressive faces and exaggerated silhouettes are characteristic of 16th-century Austrian and Southern German printmaking traditions. Accompanied by an antique wooden storage box...

Antique German 15th- 16th Century Infantry Armour with Bascinet, Sword & Halberd

Located in Doha, QA

The suit is mounted on an antique wooden mannequin stand measuring 175 cm in height and includes its original linen undergarment and chainmail shirt...
