Late Edo Period Japanese Owl Daruma Wooden Mold Sculpture・Wabisabi Mingei Zen
Late Edo Period Japanese Owl Daruma Wooden Mold Sculpture・Wabisabi Mingei Zen

Late Edo Period Japanese Owl Daruma Wooden Mold Sculpture・Wabisabi Mingei Zen

Located in 足利市, JP

An exceptionally rare 19th-century Edo period Japanese folk art sculpture: an authentic Tama-Daruma wooden mold in the rare "Owl" (Fukuro) style, carved from a solid, heavy block of Keyaki (Japanese zelkova) wood from the Tama region of Tokyo. Daruma represents Bodhidharma, the 5th-century Indian monk who founded Zen Buddhism. According to legend, Bodhidharma meditated facing a wall for nine years until his limbs withered away, giving rise to his iconic limbless form—a timeless Japanese symbol of perseverance ("Seven times down, eight times up"). Unlike standard red Daruma dolls, this piece represents a highly coveted regional variant crafted in the Tama region of Tokyo (Edo) known as the Fukuro (Owl) Daruma. The stylized face—featuring large concentric eyes (moku-zan, referencing Bodhidharma's unblinking Zen meditation) and a beak-like nose—closely mirrors an owl, a revered bird in Japanese folklore symbolizing wisdom, protection, and good fortune (Fuku). Carved from dense, heavy Keyaki wood, this master matrix (Ki-gata) served as the mold for artisans to layer damp washi paper for Hariko (papier-mâché) figures. Transcending its functional origin, it stands today as a powerful piece of primitive Zen folk art (Mingei). The face exhibits rhythmic chisel marks (Nomi-ato), while the reverse displays a hollowed base and a dramatic natural age crack along the grain, embodying pure Wabi-sabi aesthetics. Item Details Object: Japanese Fukuro (Owl) Tama-Daruma Mold...

Japanese Antique Weathered Tin plate・19th Century Wabi-sabi Abstract Wall Art

Japanese Antique Weathered Tin plate・19th Century Wabi-sabi Abstract Wall Art

Located in 足利市, JP

An extraordinary found-object sculpture and wall art piece from 19th-century Japan: an authentic 19th-century galvanized tin plate (Buriki-ita), originally used as a protective heat liner beneath the ash bed of a traditional Hibachi (charcoal brazier). Over a century of exposure to hot ash, embers, and gradual oxidation has transformed this functional industrial sheet into a captivating piece of abstract art with a profound Wabi-sabi presence. The surface displays a rich tapestry of weathered gray patina, mottling, and organic rust formations. Most notably, a distinct circular burn mark near the upper section mirrors the ethereal form of a full moon emerging through mist—a serendipitous embodiment of the Japanese Mitate philosophy (reinterpreting everyday objects as fine art). Equipped with a discreet wire loop at the top for wall mounting, this piece can be hung vertically as a striking modern wall sculpture or utilized horizontally as a rustic display tray (Shikita) for ceramics, Ikebana, or incense burners. With its raw industrial tactile qualities and rich historical patina, this object bridges antique Japanese utilitarian craft with contemporary minimalist and industrial interior aesthetics. Object: Japanese Antique Hibachi...
