Art Deco 1920s Silver, Glass and Paste Vintage Necklace and Earrings Set
Located in Wilmslow, England
Made from silver, this elegant and rare jewellery set dates from the 1920s.
Condition Report:
Very Good - A tiny chip to the point on a couple of the triangular stones. This is consistent with age and use and does not detract from the appeal of the set.
The Details...
This necklace and earrings set is constructed from silver. The necklace isn't hallmarked, but tests as being made from silver. The earrings are stamped - the reverse of one is stamped 'STERLING' and the reverse of another is stamped 'SILVER'. Both pieces are detailed with triangular cut, purple glass stones and round, colourless paste stones. All of the stones are open-back mounted, claw set and multi-faceted. The necklace also features a delicate cable chain and fastens with a bolt ring. The necklace measures 46cm in length. The earrings measure 3cm x 1cm each and attach to the ears with a screw-back mechanism.
A Short History...
During the 1920s and early 1930s, jewellery was influenced by the dawn of a new era. There was a push for all things modern after the shock of the First World War - people wanted to be cleansed of the old and celebrate the new. In the world of design a pure, hard-edged style was craved. This was evident in Bauhaus architecture, cubist art and the dropped-waist, linear-cut silhouette of the Flapper Girl. Jewellery designers looked to celebrate a burgeoning, bright industrial future in their work, creating pieces that looked almost mechanical with their sharp shapes and chrome coloured highlights. This set is certainly a-typical of Art Deco jewellery design during the period - its bold geometry, encrusted with bright pastes for a new feminine look and movement.
