The city of Cuernavaca, the ancient Quauhnahuac, is called the "City of Eternal Spring" due to its designation as tierra templada (temperate region). It is believed to be one of the origins of the Mesoamerican civilization. The city is home to a number of notable early churches dating from the 16th to the 18th centuries, including the Cuernavaca Cathedral, which was a part of the monastery of the Third Order of the Franciscans, called La Asunción in the 16th century.
