This extremely rare, exquisite pendant lamp, is a part of Ingo Maurer’s Uchiwa series, designed for Design M in 1974, which epitomizes the dynamic and innovating essence of 1970s design. Named ‘Hana I’, this ceiling light features six fans crafted from bamboo and rice paper, materials traditionally used in Japanese Uchiwa fans, lending the piece organic elegance. Each fan, delicately connected to the central bamboo fixture, creates an enchanting silhouette when illuminated. Light seeps gracefully through the rice paper and the cotton diffuser, casting soft, diffused radiance, while the bamboo elements cast intriguing shadows, thus creating an immersive lighting experience. The cotton fabric details add a tactile depth to the design, enhancing its whimsical nature. Due to the usage of these delicate materials, many of these light sculptures have been damaged or lost over the years. Therefore the ones remaining have become a unique find. This particular Lamp has small repairs and damage of the light bulbs to three of the fans in the rice paper, which are hardly visible when assembled. Rare Uchiwa ‘Yotsuba’ chandelier in very good condition. Designed by Ingo Maurer in the 1970s Manufactured by M Design, Germany The ‘Yotsuba' chandelier is only produced for one year which makes this piece incredibly rare. It is handmade from bamboo and Japanese rice paper and hangs from three ropes which can be adjusted to alter the drop of the lamp. The chandelier consists of 4 fans which are interlocked and connected to each other by a split pin, when the lamp is lit the fans seem translucent which gives a beautiful effect. This specific pendant can also be used as a flush mount, the original metal parts for attaching it directly to the ceiling are included. Ingo Maurer’s interest in paper for lampshades was linked with his interest in Japan.
