Spanish Colonial Furniture

SPANISH COLONIAL STYLE

After the conquest of Mexico in 1521 and the Philippines in 1565, Spain dictated a global culture. The colonization of territories in the Americas, Western Europe, Africa, Oceania and the Pacific imposed the values of Spain, including Catholicism, while the extraction of resources reinforced the empire’s wealth and power. Unlike many styles that came out of European colonialism, such as British Colonial, Spanish Colonial furniture and architecture frequently mixed local heritage with the artistic traditions of Spain.

Spanish Colonial furniture was informed by the shifting styles of Europe as well as Indigenous culture. There were Inca tapestries depicting Spanish coats of arms and Baroque chairs adorned with tropical flora. The butaca, a low easy chair popular in the Caribbean, was inspired by Rococo’s curving forms and the shape of precolonial seating. In New Mexico, Pueblo artisans carved chests with patterns reminiscent of Anasazi art.

Even within the homes of the wealthy, furniture was usually restricted to necessities like benches, desks, cupboards and chests. These were often ornately designed and especially important for storing prized goods like textiles. Spanish Colonial houses were built with adobe and clay and tended to be minimally decorated, so the style’s heavily carved wooden furniture pieces stood out against a home’s white stucco walls.

The Spanish Colonial period mostly came to an end after the territories achieved independence from Spain. However, its aesthetics continued to influence Southwestern style and Spanish Colonial Revival style after Spanish Colonial style was used extensively at San Diego’s 1915 Panama-California Exposition.

Spanish Revival Sofa Floral Tapestry Chenille Fabric Barley Twist Turned Spindle
Spanish Revival Sofa Floral Tapestry Chenille Fabric Barley Twist Turned Spindle

Spanish Revival Sofa Floral Tapestry Chenille Fabric Barley Twist Turned Spindle

Located in Topeka, KS

Incredible vintage Spanish Revival or Mediterranean style floral tapestry chenille sofa comprised of a dark wood frame with barley twist spindle post sides, brass decorative details, three foam filled loose zippered Dacron wrapped foam seat cushions, and three loose zippered Dacron wrapped foam back cushions, two bolster arm pillows, new dust cover, round tapered wood back legs, and front ball casters. Beautiful condition, keeping in mind that this is vintage and not new so will have signs of use and wear even if it has been refinished or restored. Specifically, at first look I thought this sofa was reupholstered but given a second look this is its original! It is in great condition. But the foam in the seat cushions is starting to show its age and will need to be replaced soon; however, that’s easy to do with the zippered cushions. Please see photos, zoom in for details, and see long description as they are part of the condition report. We attempt to portray any imperfections. Circa, 1970’s. Someone call the 1970’s…. it seems to have forgotten its SPECTACULAR SOFA!!!! We have a wonderful Spanish Revival sofa...

The Anatolian Court: Late 19th Century Oushak Masterpiece of Ottoman Elegance

Located in Dallas, TX

74175 Rare Late 19th Century Antique Turkish Oushak Rug, 10'05 x 14'03. Woven in the historic weaving houses of western Anatolia during the late 19th century, this antique Turkish Oushak rug is a rare and resplendent artifact from a golden age of textile artistry. Revered for their signature large-scale motifs and opulent yet understated palettes, Oushak rugs of this period were the preferred choice of Ottoman courts and European aristocracy alike. This one-of-a-kind masterpiece, hand knotted in wool with painstaking care, showcases an earthy symphony of mossy greens, sunlit saffrons, and terra cotta tones—all mellowed by time into a sublime harmony. The abrashed field and naturally faded dyes imbue this exclusive rug with a gentle patina that speaks of sunlight, silence, and centuries of dignified use. The central field of this precious artifact is adorned with a lyrical allover pattern—a graceful choreography of stylized florals, leafy tendrils, and radiant palmettes. The spacing between these motifs creates a fluid rhythm, evoking the meditative repetition of ancient Anatolian garden designs. Each bloom and vine appears as though it has emerged from the earth itself, echoing the Oushak weavers’ reverence for nature as a source of both inspiration and spiritual symbolism. This delicate balance of intricacy and openness allows the viewer’s eye to wander and rest, offering a visual and emotional refuge from the busyness of modern life. Encircling the field is a sumptuous border system, elegantly composed of interlacing scrolls, floral meanders, and finely wrought guard bands. The border not only frames the composition but elevates it—like a carved wooden frame around a frescoed panel. These classical flourishes reveal the unmistakable hand of a master weaver, one who understood the poetry of proportion and the power of restraint. The muted yet glowing palette ensures the piece integrates effortlessly into both opulent and minimalist interiors, creating a bridge between past grandeur and present-day serenity. To walk upon this exquisite work of art is to tread softly on history itself. It offers more than aesthetic pleasure; it invites its beholder into a world where every knot is a gesture of devotion, every fade a chapter of lived experience. This is a carpet for the collector who values soul as much as surface, legacy as much as luxury. Whether adorning the salon of a Provençal estate or the library of a Manhattan penthouse, it stands as a singular statement of cultivated taste—an heirloom imbued with enduring grace, scarcity, and the quiet prestige of the truly exceptional. Rendered in variegated shades of earthy greens, rusty oranges, golden ochre, rich yellows, light green, sage, brick red, terra cotta, saffron, brown, olive green, bronze, marigold, cinnamon, mustard, baked clay, moss, and sandstone with other accent colors. Abrash. Hand-knotted wool. Made in Turkey. Measures: 10'05 X 14'03. Date: 1880's. Late 19th Century. Perfect for a living room, great room, state room, bedroom, dining room, wine cellar, guestroom, front room, home office or library, study, studio, loft, sitting room, hotel lobby or lounge area. Well-suited for a wide range of interior styles: Louis XV, Louis XVI, Parisian, Italian, Spanish Eclectic...
