Striking pair of French cast iron andirons designed by Edouard Schenck in the 1950s. Each piece is conceived as a highly stylized mythical creature or dragon, with an elongated body, expressive head, curved tail and sculptural legs terminating in distinctive claw-like feet.
The dark patinated cast iron enhances the expressive modeling and handcrafted character of the pieces. Their elongated silhouettes and fantastical zoomorphic forms give them a strong sculptural presence, combining functionality with the imaginative decorative vocabulary of mid-20th-century French design.
Designed to support logs within a fireplace, the pair also works beautifully as a decorative sculptural ensemble.
