Cast in the style of the famed Medici Lions, these French lion statues have been plumbed for use as fountain elements. The large lions are mirror images, with one lion having a ball under its left forepaw, while the other one has a ball under its right. They are made after the original marble statues, flanking the entrance to the Loggia dei Lanzi in Florence. When the lions were cast, the reconstituted stone was combined with an ochre dye, giving the lions their beautiful color. Exposure to the elements have led to the development of a fantastic orange, black, and light gray patina. Both lions sit on a textured rectangular base with undulating sides. The plumbing, which exits from the lion’s mouth, also terminates beneath the lion’s tail on the underside of the base. Decades of exposure to the elements has resulted in a sought-after natural, and darkened patina with moss accumulation and speckled white and green areas. A tripartite base with cavetto and quarter round molding supports a column comprised of dolphins flanked by scrolled leaves.
