A Pair of French 19th Century Life-Size Val d'Osne Cast-Iron Sculpture Torcheres

A Pair of French 19th Century Life-Size Val d'Osne Cast-Iron Sculpture Torcheres

By Val D'Osne Foundry

Located in Los Angeles, CA

A superb quality and palatial pair of French 19th century lifesize cast-iron sculptures - torcheres of Native American Indians titled "L’ Indienne" designed by Jules Salmson (French, 1823-1902) and Cast by Le Fonderies d'Art du Val d'Osne, each standing figure representing a Native American Indian male and a female scantily dressed in their native robes, one arm raised holding a light-torch with an opaline glass globe, both wearing earrings, seashell necklaces and arm-braces, raised on cylindrical cast-iron stand. Signed/cast on each pedestal: “VAL D’OSNE”. (Electrified). Paris, circa 1870-1880. Overall hHeight: 127 inches (322.6 cm) Pedestal height: 39 inches (99.1 cm) Indian man's width: 22 inches (55.9 cm) Indian man's depth: 26 3/4 inches (68 cm) Indian woman's width: 28 inches (71.1 cm) Indian woman's depth: 25 inches (63.5 cm) These fantastic and impressive pair of cast-iron sculptures, most likely representing Hiawatha and Minnehaha, were probably comissioned to Le Fonderies d'Art du Val d'Osne for export to the America's to decorate governmental buildings and parks which makes these pair a rare find and now available for a private collection. Iron sculptures were preferred over bronze for outdoor park and building decorations for their long lasting resistance to all types of weather conditions. An identical pair of sculptures, also by Val d' Osne, are currently exhibited at the National Garden of Congress in Santiago, Chile. View Pages No. 87, 88, 89. Another identical pair are also currently exhibited at The Musée de la Ville - Indian Museum "O Indio do Museo da Cidade" in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Another identical pair decorate the front of the Ópera Teatro Amazonas, Manaús, Brazil. A single figure of the female Indian...

Rene Broissand biography : René Broissand (1928-2019) was a very talented decorator and artist. Born in Tunisia to French parents, he learned the trade of welder upon arriving in France. He quickly devoted himself to this material that he learned to love: metal and particularly stainless steel, preferring it to others for its malleability and resistance. He will explore all the possibilities through exchanges with numerous artists using this material. He will be particularly determined to explore all its limits in an artistic dimension. René Broissand will never stop creating. He participated in his first exhibitions in Paris from 1963 with metal artists such as César, Hiquily, Guzman and Albert Féraud. From Basel to New York, he has held exhibitions over a period of twenty years. His career has been built around the intimate relationships he has maintained with numerous entrepreneurs and personalities. Appreciated both for his sculpture and his furniture, for this fabulous international notebook composed of personalities from the world of TV, cinema and politics, he is required to respond to important orders. His polished bronze lighting fixtures...

"Galata Morente" Sculpture in Bronze, sign: F. Barbedienne Fonduer

"Galata Morente" Sculpture in Bronze, sign: F. Barbedienne Fonduer

By F. Barbedienne Foundry

Located in Ciudad Autónoma Buenos Aires, C

F. Barbedienne fonduer Ferdinand Barbedienne (6 August 1810 – 21 March 1892) was a French metalworker and manufacturer, who was well known as a bronze founder. The son of a small farmer from Calvados, he started his career as a dealer in wallpaper in Paris. In 1838 he went into partnership with Achille Collas (1795-1859), who had just invented a machine to create miniature bronze replicas of statues. Together they started a business selling miniatures of antique statues from museums all over Europe, thus democratising art and making it more accessible to households.[2] From 1843 they extended their scope by reproducing the work of living artists and also diversified by making enamelled household objects. With the outbreak of the Franco-Prussian war in 1870 the firm briefly had to switch to cannon founding owing to the shortage of metals but resumed business afterwards. Following Barbedienne's death in 1892, he was buried in the Père-Lachaise cemetery and the firm was carried on by his nephew Gustave Leblanc until 1952. Among the principal artists reproduced by the firm were Antoine Louis Barye and Auguste Rodin. The Dying Galata (Italian: Galata morente...

French Bronze Rare Sculpture of a Panther Bunting Signed André Vincent Becquerel
French Bronze Rare Sculpture of a Panther Bunting Signed André Vincent Becquerel

French Bronze Rare Sculpture of a Panther Bunting Signed André Vincent Becquerel

By André Vincent Becquerel

Located in New York City, NY

A rare and fabulous French Art Deco large bronze signed sculpture of a bunting panther by Andre Vincent Becquerel, French, 1893-1981 This lovely cast, in a warm dark brown patina with green undertones is sculpted with highly stylized anatomical details. The sculpture rests on self base. Becquerel's favorite subject matter was cats. He often captured them in a natural setting, stretching, stalking, clawing at a tree stump or walking in tandem. The model offered here with the panther bunting/rubbing against a stump of a tree is a rare version. This innate feline behavior is seen as a sign of affection, or of a transfer of their scent to claim territory or marking you as a friend. Becquerel was born in northern France. He attended the École des Beaux-arts in Paris and studied in the ateliers of Hector Lemaître and Prosper Lecourtier, the Animalier sculptor. He also worked with Charles Valton, who had studied under both Barye and Fremiet, two other renown animalier sculptors. He began exhibiting at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1914 and continued to do so for the rest of his career. In 1944 Becquerel was awarded a bronze medal by The ‘Artistes Français’ and a gold medal in 1945. In 1952 he won the Prix de l’Yser, which made him hors concours and thus above the future competition process.
