Antique Painted Table Coffer, Dated 1915

About the Item

A rather unique painted chest from Europe, this table coffer was commissioned in 1915. The right side (when viewing from the front) is dated, with the numbers flanking a springing rabbit with its hind legs on an unfurled scroll above a fruit bound with a crinkled ribbon bow; the scroll is festooned with a stylish monogram reading “MH”. Animals and nature’s bounty are prevailing themes throughout the coffer, with the cream background adorned with multiple cartouches, hand-painted in black with some additional red accents (the red is only seen on the 10 large scenes on the front and back of the main body). Images of Renaissance-style winged cherubs and mascarons have been meticulously painted amongst a moving display of flowers and scrolls, creating visually stunning embellishments. Florets and foliate margents adorn the prominent areas of molding, most noticeably on the frieze and the base of the lid. The lid, which is mounted with a scrolled iron handle, maintains its position when ajar as the result of a folding metal arm. In a stark juxtaposition of color, the deep interior, which is topped by a 2 ½ inch tall tray with five compartments, has a honey-colored finish to the wood. Our painted coffer from 1915 can be used in any room where small storage is needed, such as a bathroom counter, on a vanity table, or on a console in a hallway.
