About the Item

Limoges Enamel Box Gamet Circa 1880 This remarkable Limoges enamel box exemplifies the artistry that made the French city one of Europe’s most celebrated centers of the fire arts. Hand-painted enamel scenes of pastoral landscapes and a courting couple adorn the copper panels, each set within an elegant bronze ormolu frame. The padded, velvet-lined interior offers a refined space for one’s most precious treasures, while the Rococo-inspired form lends the box a sense of romance and delicacy. Signed by the artist Gamet and inscribed “à la Marquise de Sévigné,” the box pays homage to Marie de Rabutin-Chantal, the celebrated French aristocrat best remembered for her brilliant letters. Limoges has been renowned for enamel, porcelain and glass for centuries, with enamel ranking among its earliest and most important decorative arts. After flourishing during the Renaissance, Limoges enamels experienced a major revival in the late 19th century, when artists and collectors renewed their appreciation for the medium’s luminous color and technical difficulty. Dating to circa 1880, this beautifully composed box reflects that revival and the enduring prestige of Limoges enamel among collectors. Signed “Gamet” and marked “France” on the underside 4 1/4" high x 8 1/2" wide x 6 3/4" deep
