Tiffany Studios New York Enameled Copper "Olive" Covered Box

By Stonebridge Glass Co., Tiffany Studios, Louis Comfort Tiffany

Located in New York, NY

This Tiffany Studios New York covered box by Louis Comfort Tiffany, covered with an enamel "Olive" motif, was executed by the Enamelware Department of The Stonebridge Glass Company in New York. The stoic composition is primarily composed of richly enameled copper, with the cover and body of this rare piece sharing decoration of subtly-hued olives, with purple-brown copper branches and deep green leaves. While the rarity of the object itself makes it an incredibly collectible item, the easy beauty of the composition also makes it an instant treasure. Tiffany and impressed SC 332" Provenance: Parke-Bernet Galleries Inc., New York, Private Collection, circa 1965, thence by descent to the present owners Literature: Box pictured in Behind the Scenes of Tiffany Glassmaking: The Nash Notebooks, by Martin Eidelberg and Nancy McClelland, New York, 2001, pp. 21 and 178 (for the model executed in pottery); Box also pictured in Louis C. Art Deco No. 1A Kodak Camera Box in Multicolor Enamel by Walter Dorwin Teague

By Walter Dorwin Teague

Located in New York, NY

This striking Art Deco Kodak No. 1A Gift Camera Box is a beautifully designed collector’s piece from circa 1930 by Walter Dorwin Teague, showcasing signature elements of the era’s bold aesthetic. Crafted with exquisite multicolor enamel accents and sleek polished nickel, the camera box embodies a fusion of elegance, functionality, and modern geometric design that defined the Art Deco movement. The hues of the piece resonate with staggering beauty and harmony, with a deep oxblood red hues in bold rectilinear shapes sumptuously paired with sienna and a partially concealed circle of vermillion crimson that anchors the more subdued tones with a bright and expressive contrast. Alongside the sleek polished nickel framework in stunning condition, this piece is notable for both material and conceptual design from the period, with a lovely ebonized finish on the side surfaces of the box. Designed not only as a practical photographic device but also as a statement of style, this Kodak camera box was marketed as a luxurious gift item. Whether treasured as a unique decorative object or a nostalgic nod to early 20th-century camera...

Gorham Aesthetic Movement Sterling Mixed-Metal Box with Lizard and Mice, 1883

By Gorham CO.

Located in West Palm Beach, FL

Gorham Aesthetic Movement Sterling Mixed-Metal Box with Lizard and Mice, 1883 Dimensions: 3.5" W × 2.5" D × 1.5" H Materials: Copper with applied silver decoration Marks: Gorham, date letter “P” for 1883 A finely crafted American Aesthetic Movement mixed-metal box by Gorham, executed in copper with sculptural silver appliqué. The domed lid features a dynamic lizard in high relief, accompanied by two playful mice in motion, all arranged above a silvered ground with grasses and textured earth. The decoration is set asymmetrically against the warm copper body, leaving generous areas of polished surface that highlight the contrast between metals. The interior is left plain, showing use consistent with age. The imagery reflects the strong influence of Japanese Meiji-era design on Gorham in the late 19th century. Themes of small animals and naturalistic vignettes were drawn directly from Japanese art, where lizards were regarded as symbols of protection and renewal, and mice were associated with quickness, fertility, and in some contexts, good fortune. Together, they create a whimsical narrative of pursuit, rendered with wit and naturalistic detail. This work exemplifies the Aesthetic Movement credo of “Art for Art’s Sake,” emphasizing beauty, asymmetry, and nature study over traditional allegory. Gorham’s mixed-metal line, developed in the wake of the 1876 Centennial Exposition, sought to rival Tiffany & Co. in innovation and design, producing decorative objects that were both functional and avant-garde. Comparable Gorham copper...
