Silk top hat in original case
About the Item
This silk top hat is housed in its original cardboard travelling case. It was made by Arthur Peppe of 23 Rue Leys in Anvers, which is the name given to Antwerp by French speakers. The makers mark on the inside of the hat is printed on watered silk and the sides are lined with fabric on a cardboard backing. The hat has a height of 165 mm (6.5 inches), width of 240 mm (9.5 inches) and a depth of 28 mm (11 inches), with an inner circumference of 52.5 cm (20.2 inches) which equates to UK size 6 3/8ths, US size 6.5 and current Eurpoean size 52. The carry case stands 210 mm (8.25 inches) high with a width of 345 mm (13.5 inches) and a depth of 300 mm (11.75 inches). The hat is in very good conditionn, but the cardboard carry case is a bit battered. It would date from the first quarter of the twentieth century.
