Faux Marble and Scarlet Ribbon Stripes Slender Document Box
By Thomas Engelhart
Located in New York, NY
Unique hand-painted papier-mâché Document Box in a marbleized and speckled salmon, Coral, and beige design with complimenting tie ribbon. From architectural follies of the eighteenth-century to crystalline rock formations, Thomas Engelhart translates the angles and polished surfaces of ancient artifacts into hand-painted paper objects. A Charleston, South Carolina native, Engelhart began his career in fashion, studying at Studio Berçot in Paris in the 1990s. His intuitive eye and meticulous attention to detail were cultivated designing for famed houses such as Thierry Mugler and Hermès. “Paris gave me elegance, rigor, and an understanding of quality,” reflects the artist. By absorbing the French approach to fait à la main, Engelhart flourished upon his return to New York in 2017. Engelhart’s papered obelisks and pyramid boxes are the result of a passion for antique curiosities...

Cartier Brass and Copper Enigma Box, 1959
By Cartier
Located in Atlanta, GA
Cartier Paris crafted this sophisticated copper and brass decorative box in the 1950s. It is a puzzle box that uses Leonardo da Vinci's specular writing technique*. If you look at the box the straight way, the text engraved on the top is incomprehensible. Placing the lidded box in front of a mirror allows the hidden message to be deciphered. This secret message is an invitation to a socialite wedding in New York in 1959! The message reads: "Mr. and Mrs. Frank L. Bernstein have the honor of announcing the marriage of their daughter Joan Honey...

YY's Jewelry Cabinet, Walnut and Copper in Customizable Configurations
By Talbot & Yoon
Located in Brooklyn, NY
As the 16th century precursors to museums, ‘Wunderkammer’ or ‘cabinets of curiosity’ collected and categorized objects of interest to a specific subject be it geology, ethnography, anthropology, etc for preservation and categorization. In the original terminology ‘cabinet’ did not mean a simple piece of furniture but designated an entire room, which is why these cabinets were originally maintained by the mercantile or aristocratic classes. In modern architecture, our specific interest, the ‘Wunderkammer’ brings to mind European post-war housing projects such as Le Corbusier’s Unite d’Habitation projects or the housing units at Pessac with individuals inhabiting individual apartments made specific by containing the personal artifacts of those occupying them and amassed as a single building. This miniature...
