An attractive early 17th-century carved oak box of boarded construction from the reign of Charles I, circa 1640. England The box is deeply carved and punch decorated to the frieze in a geometric pattern with rose (guilloche) and lunar decoration, each punch decorated; centred by the original Iron staple lock plate. The moulded rectangular top retains the original Iron clasp and opens on the original hinges. The guilloche was a popular Renaissance motif and was very widely used across the 16th, 17th and early 18th centuries. The box is in its original condition and has a lovely rich colour and patina. The 17th century was a period of great turbulence in British history and this was reflected in art and design. The period began with the ending of the Tudor dynasty...
